This 1973 2.4 E is a proper little sleeper. To the untrained eye it is a very pretty classic 911, but to those in the know the lack of wheel centre caps and sill trims, the low ride height and the 7-inch Fuchs give clues that all is not as it seems.

The car was originally delivered new in late 1972 as a 1973 model by Porsche North America, happily its 1972 build date makes it road tax exempt in the UK.

It is fully matching number and the silver paint is correct to its original spec, as are the optional black Recaro sports seats. Purists will also delight in the fact that it was delivered without a sunroof.

The car was restored in the US around 2002, including a bare metal respray, on top and underneath.

The original engine was rebuilt to 2.4 S spec and has covered about 20,000 miles since. A recent rolling road print-out at leading UK specialist Bob Watson shows a very healthy 196bhp at 6990rpm and it feels superbly powerful on the road, gutsy down low but with a real appetite for revs and a glorious howl beyond 5000rpm.

The gearbox was rebuilt about 10,000 miles ago and a OEM limited slip differential fitted.

Suspension upgrades included stiffer torsion bars, 911 Turbo tie rods, Bilstein dampers, adjustable spring plates and Elephant Racing polybronze bushes. The geometry is set for fast road use, providing delicate steering and planted road holding without comprising comfort too greatly. The car rides and handles impeccably.

The interior is pleasingly good for a US car, with a superb dash top, neat door pockets, an excellent headliner and smart salt n pepper carpets. The black vinyl Recaros are original to the car and in great shape also. A genuine 70s 370mm Momo Prototipo wheel (not a modern replica) replaces the larger standard item and lends the helm a more sporting feel but retains the lightness and fingertip-chatter that can be missing with more modern, smaller sports wheels. The rev counter has been recalibrated to put the red-line at 12 o'clock, a subtle but purposeful detail that sums this car up nicely.

The car is supplied with a thick history folder from the US and a recent service and rolling road set-up in the hands of its only UK owner. It is very much ready to go.

If you are looking for a subtle, fast road early 911 that is perfectly set up, great to drive and built with a very careful eye on originality, this really is an excellent car. For those less keen on the R Gruppe look, a pair of sill trims, wome wheel centres and a few more details would have it looking very standard indeed.

Includes free DDK sticker, already in pride of place on the rear quarterlight. :)
