There was a thread regarding the terrible events in Japan but it got lost in the forum crash.

Such terrible events and my thoughts are with all those effected.

We haven't heard from our member 'Greg' who's based in Hokkaido Japan and hopefully we will soon.

Yes, still in Hokkaido. Shaken up a bit and now fully appreciative of just how flexible a single story, timber framed bungalow style house can be. A three metre tsunami took out some boats and cars in the local fishing port about 700 metres down the hill from here, but no loss of life locally and not a lot of visible damage. A concrete wall just 70 metres or so uphill from the house buckled and fell, and is currently being repaired, but otherwise, life and business returning to normal.

Can't say the same for the mainland, about 500 kms south west of here. The government is playing strange games with release of statistics, but the official line about 3,000 dead and likely to exceed 10,000 is laughable. There is at least one town with a 17,000 population where 10,000 are unaccounted for. Almost a week on, they are hardly likely to come waltzing in saying - here I am, surprise!! If it doesn't top 30,000 or even more I'll be very surprised.

The nuclear issue is quite another thing, and I'm not sure which side to believe. Hedging my bets. But in any case still safe here in Hokkaido at least until the winter north west monsoon , which keeps us upwind of Fukushima, stops blowing.

Have been busy and travelling, but will post in more detail soon. This is just to say, basically, that I'm OK.
