Anyone out there with a 72 oil tank with the filler flap in the rear wing mind looking at something for me?

The rubber gasket on the filler neck, does it sit underneath the opening in the wing or on top.
Also does the raised lip on the gasket sit up or down? if it's up you will be able to see it, if down you won't.

Thanks Andy that's exactly what I thought, though someone had suggested it should go underneath. I think the give away is the notch in the seal by the drain hole.

Mine is different to Andy's and sits underneath the opening on the wing. Also the lip faces up so you can see it. Pictures below.

I assume the notch is not lined up underneath anymore on mine but the notch would work either above or below.

purely from a design point of view, Andy's picture seems correct ... eg th eseal is there to act as a seal .... any excess fluid should drain through the drain hole ..... if the seal is below then fluid will bypass the drain hole

thanks for posting the picture Ian, shows why there is confusion here, but as James says, from a design point of view
it would figure that the seal on top is the best way to manage oil spillage and water ingress.

Perhaps Ferry Man could have a look at his when he gets home from a hard days graft!

I would agree with you James. The oil tank on my car could well have been removed at some point by a confused mechanic LOL.

However to add a third take onto your options Mike mine is inside and flange down...



My car has always been like that since I've owned it, but when I put the tank back in several years back I tried the other options and decided that inside was better as it isolated the tank from the body.

Flange up or down to taste!

thanks Gary, your picture reminds me of another reason why the rubber gasket on top is a good idea,
especially if your neck's not central in the hole!

My neck is rarely central in the hole. Gives me all sorts of problems doing a tie up

Grafting completed but the work never stops... ...I then had to go and check my oil filler rubber seals.

And the pictorial answer is:

Surely the job of the seal is both a gasket between body/tank and to prevent road spray/mud/etc from being flung up into the filler recess.
I can't imagine they'd worry about a little spilt oil going down through the gap.
Put the seal underneath, that's the way the factory did it on the Targa Florio cars....

Anyone got a spare oil cap? I never realised before this thread that mine is wrong!

Oh thank god I don't now have to go and change mine in this cold weather

Mike. I notice some oil caps have OIL stamped into them and some do not. Out of interest what is correct for the Targa Florio car?
