Porsche 911 3.3 Turbo - £26,995
Porsche have built a great deal of fantastic cars over the years, but few have become such an icon of their time as the original 930 911 Turbo.
The wide arches, tea tray spoiler and deep dish wheels exemplify everything that was big, brash and brilliant about the 80s and the car became the pin-up of every car-crazed child of the time.
The original Turbo was released in 1976 as a 3.0 litre with 260bhp, but was quickly upgraded for the 1979 model year to the beefier, less laggy intercooled 300bhp 3.3 fitted to this car. The performance back then was nothing short of supercar spectacular and it still feels fast and thrilling even today. It requires a few more revs to keep it on the boil than a modern 911 turbo, but that's all part of the fun and the way the car piles on speed between 4000 and 7000rpm is brilliant.
This fantastic 1979 example is a replica of the 1978 motorshow Martini Turbo car.
There were purportedly nine genuine Martini cars built by the factory at the time. They maintained the standard car's mechanicals but incorporated the red, white and blue Martini colour scheme and were fitted with special orthapaedic seats. The most recent of these that we are aware of changed hands in 2009 at around £80,000, though somehow this lacked the said seats.
This car was very nicely and comprehensively converted in 1986 and still bears an engraved dash plaque showing the owner's name and reg of the car at that time.
It remains in fine order throughout, not concours, but far better than most and thoroughly presentable and very useable. The interior is particularly pleasing, the paint bright and the wheels near mint. It has covered just 73,000 miles from new with a stack of supporting paperwork and is perfect to drive.
The standard fit air conditioning is currently not functioning, though at the higher 'Approved' price we can either repair the existing system or install a new one and the period Becker stereo won't respond to input but otherwise the car performs beautifully.
To our mind the 930 Turbo is a guaranteed future classic and represents fine value for its iconic status. It is a thrilling, useable car and a decent one, well maintained, ought to prove a sound future investment as well as a great ownership proposition.
We suspect that it won't be long before we're uttering the words 'Do you remember when you could get a 930 Turbo for under £30k?'
