LHD 1974 2.7 Carrera converted to early competition look

Retro early cars don’t come much cooler than this.
It actually started life in Italy as a matching number 1974 Carrera, meaning it was supplied new from Porsche with effectively the same running gear as the £200,000+ 1973 Carrera RS, just in an impact-bumper bodyshell. This includes the thrilling, rev-eager 210bhp 2.7 engine on mechanical fuel injection and magnesium-cased 915 box with limited-slip-differential.
The 74 Carreras are very valuable cars today, an excellent matching number LHD car might make as much as £70,000, but a decade or so ago they were not so valuable and so made excellent candidates for modification and enjoyment. That’s exactly what happened here.
The car was given its current T / R look by a well respected and long serving air-cooled writer and enthusiast who could appreciate how special the mechanicals were and wanted that fabulous early competition look. To this end the car was given pre-74 wings, lightweight bumpers and a long bonnet modified for a central fuel filler. Period competition minilite style wheels were fitted and the interior taken over to lightweight spec.
The stunning Kremer inspired colour scheme earned the car the nickname ‘The Black Baboon’ and gives the it real identity in the sea of white RS reps.
When you look closely, it’s also clear that the details have been carefully considered, the silver side stripes were chosen to colour match the harnesses, the shifter is an uber-cool period Wevo item and a mechanical Tripmaster style competition odometer has been fitted under the dash. The engine lid grill is mesh, the indicator and rear light units are in the R style and a 3-exit race silencer is fitted, complete with end blanking caps. It is also currently fitted with a cracking 1969 registration, which may be available by negotiation.
Since the original build the car has been in the ownership of some very well known names in Porsche circles, including legendary race driver Nick Faure, before passing into the hands of the most recent owner a few years ago.
Whilst it’s clear that all the right bits went into the conversion, the original builder himself happily admits that some of the work was done on a budget and not in as much depth as he would have liked. In 2008, in pursuit of perfection, the most recent owner took the car to 911 Bodyshop in London for a comprehensive, £25,000 body restoration from which it recently emerged and has since covered fewer than 1000 miles. At this time Jaz serviced and thoroughly checked the mechanicals over.
The indicated 79,000km is believed to be correct.
Cars that look as special as this are few and far between, add to that the provenance of the status of some of the previous owners, the complete body restoration and the fact that this car is based on a genuine, matching number 2.7 MFI Carrera and this brilliant little machine is something rather exceptional.
There certainly isn’t another like it.
