Head light upgrade

Post by atomman »

Hello

I have been reading about the guys over the pond putting H4's in the cars for much better brighter headlights,

Any one done this ? are they just 7"round units ?

If so do mini ones fit or mk 1 golf ?

Cheers

thanks for the link,

I have been looking over at pelican,

I was just wondering if any one had fitted them or know where to get them over here?

If there are just 7" units i can get them down the local motor factor rather than the states

I have converted all of my cars; bought my lights from Moss Cars.

Also do some with a modern look.

914 headlights don't need the side light.

I'd heard that Mk1 golf ones had been used by other folks, but I've offered some up (proper Hella ones) and they need a bit of modification to fit. I think they'd fit if I cut the metal locating lugs off the back, but I need to look a bit closer and check a couple of things, to make sure I don't trash a set of lights in the process.

I haven't decided whether to do that, or go for a mini type conversion kit instead.

I've been looking around on ebay and the link above from 914 Kev (thanks Kev)

looks like there is a lot of choice out there, from normal, crystal and even angel eyes.

Not sure about angel eyes, but i might go from the crystals and see if they look any good on the 914 and how the beam pattern is.

It get's very dark around these Welsh lanes at night

Cibie units fit straight in. I used to have Biodes in my old green 4cyl - that cured the night blindness! 8) I have Cibie H4 units in the 914/6 and they are good.

Cheers! :drunken:

If you go for higher wattage, be sure to use relays to offload the current from the switch. The old switches are bad enough with stock lights. Really I think the main harness is already overloaded; just look at the voltmeter when you turn your signal on.

you might want to take a look at the ones the mk1 mx5 boys fit too, because i think they're the same size/shape as mini lights.. there are raybrig (i think) units which have a much clearer lamp and throw a very good pattern, they might be suitable? there's also a cheaper uk version (think the raybrig ones are about £120) available for about £50 but i can't remember where from..

ooh, 2nd hand set of gen raybrig units here..

http://mx5motors.com/MX5_shop/product_i ... ucts_id=53

not sure if these will fit 914 or not, but think they're pretty compatible with golf, mini, etc. too, so should be able to make them fit![/i]

I have golf units fitted on mine (the previous owner did the mod). They work well and not too hard to fit IIRC.

Could you take a couple of pics of the install and measure the lights? Having looked into this a bit closer, I'm of the opinion that the lights are too big for the mounting rings on the 914.
