These pics are really for sigi, but I thought I'd share them.

I needed to fit a baby seat in my porsche so needed rear belts. After much research, it was suggested the rear belts from a 993 would be the best option if I wanted to fit rear belts to my 2.4S. I purchased a used set up from a breakers (when porsches crash they usually never have someone in th erear so I was confident in the belt/mech etc being undamaged) for about £90.00 for one side.

Installation was easy except for drilling the hole in the rear shelf. Due to the rear glass a standard drill & bit could not be used without removing the glass. Again after much measuring & scouting of tool shops I bought the smallest 90degree drill attachment I could, this just enabled me to drill the correct size hole. I bolted the real in place using a large spreader plate on the otherside of the shelf.



The lower mounts required no work at all. My car allready had the tunnel mounts on show, covered by plastic plugs, the other mount existed too but i had to use a scribe to stap the carpet until I found it




Anyway there you go, the way I fitted rear belts.

Brilliant, just what i needed to know for the '69. Quickfit wanted £500 to fit inertia's all round!
This may be a stupid question but I assume drilling the rear shelf goes into the engine bay - is it single or double skinned, and is access to fit the spreader plate easy? What did the 993 use to reinforce the mounting? Did you have to use special bolts?
Finally (phew) do the front 993 belts go straight in or do they have some kind of complex pretensioning system?

the panel the real bolts to is single skin & is easy to access from the engine bay (i had to remove the sound deadening sheet out of the way though), but do check by drilling a pilot hole 1st. I got all the bolts I required from the breakers although if i remember the 'lap' bolts i was supplied with were teh wrong size. I have spoken to quickfit & they can supply the correct bolts.

The spreader plates I used were actually surplace when i fitted some full race harnesses to my vw, they are just 3 or 4 mm thick steel discs about 80mm diameter. I'm sure you could make one up easy enough.

I don't know about pretension, but the 'lock' works fine

Just one question - were the rear inertia reels mounted horizontally in the 993 ? ie are they designed to work horizontally ?

from what I gathered from my research, the 993 reals were mounted horizonatlly too, but hidden behind the parcel shelf covering

I'm bringing this post back to life as I wonder if anyone's had any new experiences. I bought a pair of 964 rear belts from ebay. One is perfect, the other is sticking and I have decided to write it off in case it doesn;t work when needed. I now have doubts about the other one. Anyone know who sells an inertia reel that works horizontally like these? I've looked at the Securon site after buying a pair for the fronts but they don't seem to do anything similar.

I think some VW Polos and Golfs have horizontal mounts in the rear, although I think they're slung underneath the parcel/speaker shelf bit. should work turned over?

Just a thought?

I've looked at the Securon website. They have one that is adjustable so can be used horizontal. Confused now as to what type of attachment the female part of the buckle should have. They have 15cm metal ones or 32cm webbing. Neither are really suitable for the rear of the car as the mounts are quite high up. I suppose I could get them re-stitched to shorten the buckle. Same problem applies for the Golf/Polo option I think Nige.

When you say turned over what do you mean?, the one I've taken apart has a weight in it so it locks if inverted.

I got a set from "quickfit safety belt services" and fitted them in my '75 911.
From memory they were around £48 each. quickfitsbs.co.uk

Fitting was easy enough, as the mounting points were already there, so just had to make suitable holes in the trim.
