As our group's translator I went along for the ride.
We even got to see inside the on site driver's emergency medical centre

Barry, it was an incident with a crutch (of the walking aid kind before anyone says anything), a finger and a heavy german door. Finger came of worst. Surgery the following week at the Royal Free removed my fingernail and stitched up the nail bed. Nice! Should grow back though and bone seems to mend itself...

Home at last, home at last.

2011 miles.
8 tanks of fuel... maybe 9
1 litre of oil.
Max temp, touching 230.
Breakdowns, none.
Punctures, none.
Problems, just the one, starter solenoid didn`t like the heat, so when I couldn`t park on a hill, we needed bumping..... thanks to everyone involved, there were many.

We stormed through France. At about a thousand miles the car had a bit off a stutter at 4150 revs but bolting the carbs back on cured that, no problem.... seemed they`d come a bit loose with all that heat.

To be honest I fully expected to return home from some point on a recovery vehicle, hell, how reliable can a 42 year old car with 150k on the clock be ? I was told to have faith but I didn`t really. I do now.

The journey was made all the better with the D`eser sports seats I had fitted last year. Broken in now, they are extremely comfortable on long journeys and the 380mm RS style wheel with thick grip, so much better than standard issue.

Best bit ? Everybody holding their breath as the supercharged Aston and the lotus spun on oil at Indianapolis but unbelievably didn`t collide... oh, and the Daytona going straight on at Arnage corner.... and.... lots and lots of other things.

Worst bit ? Playing Death Race 2000 on the A1 for 270 miles last night. Give me French roads (and French drivers) everytime.

You were brave, a lot of miles but at a calculated 33 to the gallon if my maths are correct??? thats very good indeed.

Just to put my mind at rest, the temp gauge wiring was faulty wasn't it??

Finally who drove???

And you didn't have to adjust anything on that trip?

Your car looks like new and if thats the case well more than well done.

I'm afraid the temp gauge works v well indeed - the fan belt wasnt broken either- the 43degree heat, a dose of red driving mist and the opportunity to max out at Le Sarthe were not a good combination for the engine though - as you've probably gathered from the posts about this year's event it was HOT.

Cooled down ok with no problems - probably as well we only did the one lap

Driver - that would be me, my reward for the last 4 years.

Adjustments - wd40 in the indicator switch and speedo, and a few little jobs to do now we're home

so overall mega pleased with how it ran

James pleased you kept it to the one lap. Yes, even on my car running the other day when it was really hot the needle just went past midway a bit and that is the highest I have seen it go in years. I guess the Mulsanne an open road and no camera's just pushed your foot to the floor!

I would be interested to know just how hot your oil got what does off the scale equate to? What oil do you use a multigrade?

On the way home did it stay more or less in the mid position on the temp gauge?
