Well, I had my car back with its newly overhauled brakes for the princely sum of one day before it had to go back into the garage for its MOT.

Which it promptly failed for a tiny tear in that sock/seal thing round the fuel cap.

Have I found the most pedantic garage on earth ????

FUEL SYSTEM

Any fuel leak will result in a fail. Checked under the bonnet and throughout the run of the fuel line from the fuel tank to the engine.
• The fuel filler cap must fasten securely
• The seal in the cap must not be torn, deteriorated or missing
• No other defect should be present which could cause fuel to leak out.

I am not totally convinced that that tear would cause a leak, but it would seem hard to argue the point unless you took the gaiter out completely

Pedantic yes but you must fell reassured that the rest of the car is in tip top condition if all he could pick you up on was that

Are you talking about the 'concertina' rubber that fits round the filler neck on the underside of the front wing ?

If so, its job is to prevent the filler pipe from contacting the sides of the hole in the wing through which it passes (by centralising/isolating it) - it does not come into contact with any petrol!

The only MOT-failure point in this area would be if the rubber seal on the underside of the filler cap was perished, allowing fuel to spill out during 'spirited' cornering if the tank was over-filled!

By the way - that rubber 'concertina' part can be a real pig to replace...

I deliberately took it there for its MOT because they're thorough and I wanted to make sure all the recent brake work had been done to a reasonable standard. I probably could have got a pass at one of the 'dodgier' local garages but don't reckon it's worth the risk on a car that age. It's going off to the local OPC (ker-ching !!!!) for the fuel seal thingy and a tune - I've just found out the head mechanic there is the guy who worked on the Le Mans Porsches!

OPC take your DDK memebership card and see if you get a discount.....

Further to this, when I was looking at the failure form at the weekend I noticed that my car had been put through (and passed!) the emissions test. I thought cars this age were exempt?

You're right, your car should only be subject to a visual emissions test

Well I think that it's a bit tough to fail on that

Hurrah, mine passed yesterday - only a little persuassion required to convince them that the brake lights did actually work it's just that you have to lean fairly heavy on them with lead shoes on! One thing I noticed while doing a few quick fixes was that someone in the past seems to have replaced about half of the proper screws on the car with poxy wood screws!
