Chances are I'll be in a position to fit my front and rear windows this weekend - hopefully...
So:

I can fit the front without needing to have the dash top fitted, yes?- the dash material doesn't need to wrap under anything does it?

Ali trim-
The car came all with quite a few ali trim sets- I seem to have enough I hope to make a set of either the thin trim or the thicker trim.
Not sure if the difference is anything but cosmetic?
Or should one size only fit a certain rubber, cos if so, I don't know which size rubber I have- can I tell in some way?
I have a 356b t5, so smaller rear screen- thats the only difference I know of..

Any fitting advice I should know- Ive done a few screens in the past but didn't know if there are any pitfalls I might miss on a 356.

I have a t5b in Brighton. You're welcome to take a look at how mine is for guidance.

If you go to www.356registry.com and on the opening listing click the "troubleshooting and repair" heading then when open, scroll down to the near bottom "exterior heading " then in this section there is an article on how to fit a new front window. It might prove helpful but I still have my original so have not yet had the problem.

Seems it helps to have 2 people involved.

i recently fitted the screens to my A -

be prepared to swear -and then swear again

make sure you have genuine rubbers - and be prepared to swear

Todays Tip

The Steel Section under the dash top - (between the front edge of the padded Dashtop and the Screen) - should be painted to match the Dashtop colour (NOT body Colour)

make sure you have the correct rubber seals for your car. apparently they are diffrent depending which coachbuilders factory the car came out of.

i didn't know this untill my 356c started leaking like a sieve every time it rained. because we had the wrong design of seals fitted. trying to fit the wrong design will also make it alot more difficult to do.

Took ages to get the rubber on, its been stored for gawd knows how long and some of the rubber 'talc/ grease etc was just like wax .
Wasn't the easiest job pushing in the Ali trim by hand either.....
And then it really didn't seem to want to bed down onto the frame very well. I had to give up in the end (front) as run out of time.
As I left it, the rear one seems a perfect fit, the front is hard to tell as I havent got round to pushing it in properly. Makes the window glass look small! ( even though it isn't as that's the same hole it came from!!!)
Still, its looking more like a car ever time I get to work on it !

Cant believe the hardest job so far in the entire resto is doing something as simple as fitting the # # rubbers.

5- FIVE- 5!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! chuffing goes at assembly/ fitting the rear screen rubber into the car.
The metal trim, which is a 'visible' perfect fit in the rubber/ metalwork, keeps popping out in one corner

still haven't finished it, and that's the screen that looks like the closet fit too, so gawd knows what the front will be like, which, when sat in the screen hole, doesn't even look like it came from the same car!!!!

told ya ...

i have found the ally trim needs to be 'shaped' to the glass prior to assembly in the rubber . i may be worng, but it works for me .

this means carefully making sure the profile is as close to the glass profile as possible - i use a plastic hammer to shape the trim , it takes a while, but the results are generally much better than when not using the glass as a forming template.
once the rubber is seated give the trim a good tap to aid the process in any areas which look out of shape .

and remember those swear words -because you will need them

Yeh, I pretty much had it by eye to begin with, I then used a rubber mallet to form the strip around the metal lip on the car itself, hoping that would work.
I think what the problem is, is that the strip itself is twisted where it needs to sit down, so the mounting bar on the strip is at the wrong angle.

Ive got to the stage where I am inventing swear words too !
