It certainly looks rusty enough. I don't think I've ever seen an early 911 in this colour in the flesh before either.

But, like the 'S', it's obviously got a story, and is just the sort of thing I'd like to do for myself.

One thing's for sure though, you'd need exceptionally deep pockets for this one, and even DIY'ing it would be tight on the figures.

Royal Purple is a bit of a treat, possibly superceding my favorite colour of all time... aubergine.

I think I recognise this car.

Way back when, Max (Revival Cars) had it I believe and I very nearly bought it off him. As I recall it was completly shot - all the classic rust spots were there in all their glory - even the roof rusted thru!!

I ended up buying a targa resto project which sat in the garage for 6 months and then ebayed that and got the gorgeous Blut Orange 912 that has passed through DDK on several occasions!!

I do love the purple though!!

Nick had this car which was eventually restored by Alan but colour changed to gemini blue. Once owned by JB on here. Pity it wasn't kept in it's original colour. Was for sale on ebay not long after completion.

There was a Royal purple RS close to final days of production which Andy knows about. Think it was repainted white/blue.........shame.

Yes, RS chassis no 1576 was an original UK-supplied car in Lilac which was ordered with the 'ducktail delete' option so came with this aluminium engine lid:

Very nice I love Roman Purple too, definately one of the best 'period' colours. An RS with ducktail delete sounds awesome, shame it was repainted the same as all the others

Andy, O/T for this thread but that lid has the same plastic RS lettering that mine has... I always understood that this was originally planned for the RS but never used. The previous owner of my car bought it when it was 2yrs old and it was on the ducktail then, so guesses it came out of the factory like that. Mine is an early car so maybe they did use them on a few production cars and options like yours...any thoughts?

Nigel - the explanation that I heard (that seems plausible) was that it was used when a Touring model was ordered/supplied without decals.

Incidentally, I never owned #1576 - I just aquired the engine lid after the 2nd owner fitted a ducktail (very early on in the car's life) & stored the original aluminium lid on top of his wardrobe for the next 23 years !!

Well, the car was sold to someone who made their first bid on it in the last 30 seconds. But they bid £4557.57 for it.

Lets hope it gets the restoration it deserves.

Not me, but I have seen the car in person just a few days ago. The owner (then) is a great chap and very sad to see it go. Hopefully it will be restored to it's former glory.

Blimey. That's only £500 less than I paid for my complete running taxed and ticketed '72T 6 years ago. Guess it shows how much the market for pre impact 911s has soared in recent years.

Perhaps I've owned my last one .
