I'll take a wild guess Ian - as above an IB Carrera 2.7 - and I suspect it may be donating it's engine to your car??

I really hope that nobody is going to transplant the engine of a REAL factory 2.7 Carrera impact bumper into a replica car  These cars are getting so seldom...

And herein lays my conundrum.

James – it is North of me and South of you :-)

I have purchased a complete (taxed but MOT expired) RHD 1975 Carrera Targa, that has the Type 911/83 210bhp engine and 915 5-speed gearbox that I had hoped one day to find for my car.

The owner has had the car for 15+ years, having purchased it from Ireland and then had it maintained by Strasse in Leeds, covering a mere 7,500 miles in that time. The odometer shows 72K miles from new.

The car shows signs of paint blistering and surface rust on most panels, although TBH I won’t know the full extent until I get it to Tuthills for examination. However, it starts first time and runs without smoke or undue rattling as can be seen in the video. I realise I am taking a punt on this car, but after a long meeting with the owner, I believe it to be very genuine.

I (and the current owner) believe it to be beyond economic restoration if using Professionals and it would be a serious undertaking for an amateur DIY fan.

Consequently, and after much thought, I have decided to use the engine and gearbox, plus associated fuel pump and other ancillary items such as oil lines, cooler, speedometer and rev counter in my 911T. This is why I put out the possible For Sale notice on my engine and gearbox.

I know there are many that will see this as almost sacrilege, but I truly believe it is not economic to save the car, and I do not have the funds to do so – and I do want the engine and gearbox, and these are very very hard to find.

I will be selling the complete rolling chassis once Tuthills have done the engine transplant, as I do not have room or time to break it individually. I will be open to offers on this in due course.

For now I am leaving it to Tuthills to drop the two engines and start their assessment.

Thats a bloody great find Ian, no hesitation or question for me, you've got a sorted pre-impact shell and good mechanicals from the targa - no brainer - make one good car and sell the rest of what you don't need on.
Will be a great project this one when done :)

If its a pre Galvanised Targa, then it could well take a fair amount of restoration. Just look at the work done by Barry on my early Galvanised shell !
I guess as a coupe the decision to restore/back date/use for parts is easier as the coupe's are normally more valuable.
I like Targas, well I would say that wouldn't I. A 2.7 Carrera Targa must be quite rare now, but that doesn't change the economics. But sadly without its engine, its just another old rusty Targa shell.
I don't say you are wrong to do it Ian, it looks like a good way to get the parts that will make your car what you want. Go for it ! It will make for a very nice car ! If you don't someone else will, Fact !
Cheers
