2.2E - Engine/Clutch/Transmission judder in reverse

Hi all

Coming off a low-knowledge base here...........My 2.2E has a habit of juddering horribly when trying to reverse at low revs (sub say 1500rpm) - this occurs only in reverse and as soon as I pick up the revs past say 2000rpm it smooths out.

The judder appears to be clutch or I guess transmission/engine mount related - has anybody had similar experiences and any ideas to assist isolating the problem?

Many thanks

The clutch on my 1970E had a judder, I changed my flywheel and that did not cure it, we found out once my pivot bolt had snapped that it was the pivot bolt that was causing the judder. It was cracked and causing the release bearing to sit wonky on the pressure plate and thus the judder. You may have the same problem.

Hope that helps.

Kind Regards

Very diligent on the follow-up am I.....

Well having pulled engine for a box rebuild, it was the clutch plate - the centre rubber dampening unit had totally disintegrated (I must say that I had expected steel springs as per the photographs I'd previously seen....).

This also explained why it was worse on a hot day or when engine hot - the rubber softened/was more compliant and made the judder worse....
