what a coincidence Mike, I've been keeping my eye on Caterhams for 12 months now .... just need to persuade certain family members

I know Andy has a nice 'classic' so he's worth talking to

Personally I'd be looking at a K-series roadsport or acadamy car in that prce range as the crossflow is getting on a bit.

I'm wanting a superlight with 6 speed box & LSD, which can be had for not much more money

I would say it's overpriced by at least £1000.

I'm about to put mine up for sale at a similar price - it's a 2001 1.6 Vauxhall-engined model in 'classic Lotus 7' colours, low miles (~6.5k), is in immaculate condition & comes with an interesting registration number.

I've just (unexpectedly !) bought another (non-Porsche) car which unfortunately means the Caterham has to go as I now have far too many cars ...

Brief explanation of these differences James to expand my knowledge. What is the difference between a roadsport, academy and superlight versions.

I'm no expert so might need correcting ...... Caterham's are all basically the same chassis ( The SV is a wide version) , but with higher or lower specs. Roadsports are obviously specc'ed more road friendly ( in theory) & superlights are specced more towards the track

if you go through their price list, you'll see you can spec up a Roadsport to Superlight, but it will still be a roadsport etc etc Similarly you can spec up an R300 to a comfy road spec

K-series motors are the most common & easilly tuned ( 2nd hand cars ) New cars are running Ford Sigmas or Duratechs

X-flows & Vauxhaul engined have their own fans ... best to read up on blatchat / pistonheads regarding engine choise

Acadamy cars are the cars purchased for the Acadamy race series. Quite a few of these about & they can be a good buy. Relatively low spec with 5 speed boxes, no heater etc but do come with useful track stuff, eg cage , battery cut offs.

Basically you need to check out the spec of cars you are looking at to be able to compare like for like ... different suspension, gearbox, engine spec, weather gear ? heaters ? etc etc

I had a Caterham for 5 years before getting my Porsche. I had a K series car and loved it. Happy to share my knowledge/experience.
