Hello, intro and dilemma....

Hi All,
I have spent a lot of time on this forum lately and thought it was about time I'd introduce myself.....HI
An avid Porsche fan pretty much from puberty (started with that nice Purple Carrera on the wall)

(this should give you an idea of my age now....
Right! the reason for my first post is that I have a dilemma and would value your thoughts. I have owned several modern Porsches. Currently a 987 Boxster and a 997 C2S. My Dilemma is that slowly but surely I spent all my time researching Early 911's and totally NEGLEGT my 997....I think it's time to give in to this not so subtle urge and plunge into early 911 ownership... My first question would be where do I go? I am not a mechanic so should I sell my 997 first? Should I look for Trade to Px my 997 for an early S?
My head tells me sell the 997 first, take your time, scan the market....etc....
HELP!..

Hi Fozzy and welcome to DDK.
Sell the 997 and take your time looking would be my advice. I think it would be a long shot to find a private seller looking to trade an early car for a 997. Dealers tend to be specialists in one field or the other although there are exceptions but that would limit you to the early cars they have in stock.
Good luck
Regards
Mike

Mike proffers good advice. Now on my second 911 (or should that be '12) and took 18 months to find #1 and 2 years #2
Take your time - come to lots of DDK events and have a look at the cars and see what type/model/year does it for you, then let research and the foot slog take over....then one day the right car will pop up
Welcome to DDK BTW - hope you find it a great resource

Welcome to DDK. Good luck with your search for an early car.
When you sell that 997, don't say you've been neglecting it.

Hi Fozzy,
I called in Paragon the weekend before last and their salesman Jamie was saying they couldn't get their hands on enough 997's at the mo' so it might be worthwhile speaking with them.

Incidentally, they have a mighty fine '65 911 that you might want to look at.
Good luck & enjoy the hunt!
PS. Please expect the Sales Director to drive a
very hard bargain

Thanks guys! Cleary pointing in the sell the 997 first route. @left4dead I have heard the can't get hold of good stock before.....but wow what a great car at Paragon, if I am not mistaking it's been there for a while?...
I guess it is the sensible thing to do to sell the 997. Ferryman I have followed your project here and I have to say an inspiration! to clarify what I mean with neglect is that it is left in a dehumidified garage to the point that the remote doesn't function and one has to use the drivers door to get in (Batt cut off...)

not exactly what you would want to do with a modern Porsche, it should be driven. This is the problem exactly though its a fantastic car, it's so good that to get that sense of connection with the road one has to drive...well... almost 70Mph

.
My point is that when you buy a car as part of the weekly relax therapy you want it to engage you to the extent that you forget about work, etc etc... and to put it simply even in Cab form the modern Porsche doesn't do that for me anymore.....must be getting old....

umm maybe about the sameish age as me then

umm, so your Boxster is your everyday runner then and the 997 just for the week-end/fun ?
to be honest i think before you rush out and sell your 997 and buy a early 911 you need to make sure that you could get on with driving/living with a old porsche. they are a very very diffrent beast to a modern one.
for a start they are alot noisier (especially the 911S), less comfortable and have no drivers aids at all to help you get out of trouble.
IMHO they will suffer even more greatly from not being used regularly.
not being machanically minded is not a great issue as long as you either buy a really good well looked after example or have really deep pockets to get the car you want to the condition you require.
But, i do feel it would be a good idea for you to get out and drive a few examples so you know exactly what it is you are looking for. in my experience (unlike modern cars) every car is diffrent.

Helen - you make some very valid points...
I do have experience with classics, just not classic Porsches. I own a '64 Pullhandle MGB (pretty little thing

) as well and I guess, noisier, not so comfortable, etc etc is what makes these cars so attractive...well to me anyway. It's an emotive thing I guess....
Driving a few will certainly help to shape my thoughts - any thoughts where I could start with this? also is a 'modern' Porsche owner welcome to attend your (DDK) meets?

Aaah, I had a '63 pullhandle MGB, 3 bearing crank. Split frame roof that took hours to assemble. Happy days.

That's it the owners are usually to be recognised by the cuts in their fingers.....(roof up / down..)

Engine is now 5 bearing with Webers etc....

Thanks for the offer....which Ashby are we talking about? Linconshire?
Really looking forward to meet you all at some point!
