does anyone with local knowledge know a good route off the M6 to St Bees through the lake district? I don't want to get stuck following a caravan etc on Friday night!Is it better to use the A590/A5092/A595 off Junction 36 or junction 40 onto the A66 (which looks far less convoluted).

Good question. I'm planning to use A590/A5092/A595 on saturday morning.

I guess traffic will be less of a problem then though...

you realise the Hotel is quite a long way from St Bees ?


Best way to the hotel is come off the M6 as if you are going to Mike Bainbridges, then follow the A590 to Newby Bridge .... watch out for the speed cameras.


On the Saturday morning IMHO use the main roads as they should be pretty quiet that time of the morning & most of the tourists stay within the centre of the Lakes

does this apply on a Friday late afternoon? and re the hotel I guess I should look at where it is then

put it this way ... the West coast of Cumbria could not be classed as pretty & twee ... thus not quite as busy as the central Lakes

you can go down a loverly road from kendal to newby bridge, it will take you past a couple of great pubs, one was awarded best pub of the year for grub. You end up approching newby bridge down gummers howe which provides great views along windermere. If you are interested I will plot the route for you.

James & myself sampled the Drunken Duck when we were route planning earlier in the year

Thanks for the kind offer John, though i suspect as we will have driven up from London in a (small) convoy we might want to take the most direct route to the bar... sorry hotel. Also whilst he pubs may be great i doubt we'll want to stop so close to 'journeys end' so to speak. I'll ask the other drivers and get back to you though

Am I right in thinking, there`ll be no speed cameras on Sunday ?

A quick reminder. The Great North Swim is on Sat all day and there are already signs warning of jams on the Windermere to Ambleside road. So try not go the wrong way out of Ambleside! Suggest avoiding the Troutbeck way over Kirkstone Pass - use the Struggle.
