12v conversion data

Having virtually finished stitching on all the replacement body panels and patching up all the holes, I now wish to address some of the mechanical requirements for the old girl. First off, although maybe this has been broached in previous months and if so I apologise, what company can I get my 6v generator re-wired for a 12v output and what voltage generator should be purchased. Also I want to buy a 12v starter motor, preferably one of the small hi output models. All my instruments, lights, wiper motor etc are 12v already so that's cool. Most grateful for all info,
the old girl is a '61 T6 but the motor is '59. Thanks folks.

I would be careful before you buy these parts. I would ask some questions of the professionals first who have done this conversion work before like
www.prs356.com in Essex. ( are you UK based though?)
I can say the following:
The flywheels and starter gear dimensions vary. A 59 motor has a different flywheel and starter gear to say that of a 912. Often a 6v starter is still used in a 12v conversion but runs with a 12v solinoid. PRS have high torque starters that would fit your car and you would at least know it would fit.
The generator I guess could be rewound? but companies like
www.stoddard.com supply both 12v generators and 12v regulators for 356 cars and no doubt UK suppliers like above also have them or could obtain them.
I would definately ask before you do it. Maybe PRS might give you an idea if they see this reply regarding if they can supply parts etc.

No probs Roy and thanks for the info re flywheels etc, I shall check teeth no. size and part nos. Also Stoddards were at the swap meet I attended in Hershey but they did'nt have the parts I wanted. And yep, a sunny Southerner I is.

Thats a very very good advert. He seems to have covered all the problems also. I have heard 6v starter motors running on 12v systems can also damage the ignition switch.
The fact it operates using the same 6v starter bushing in the transmission bell housing would save a lot of work on modification also.
Very interesting but I am still staying with 6V but never entirely happy with it.
