The Plan

Post by atomman »

Here goes

After the engine made a funny noise and i stripped it back in october and found two broken pistons, I have been saving and collecting parts and trying to find somewhere to start the resto, thanks to my good friend Rob, I have the use of a nice big garage :)

The plan is to strip it down, Glass out, doors off and see what lies beneath, its spent all its life in Southern California but i was sure i would find some welding, and i did, but lucky enough only a little, paint it back to the OG colour of Light Ivory and rebiuld the engine, brakes etc etc then put it all back together.
I Want the car done by March  well thats 'The Plan' anyways, so here's a few pics to wet you appetite,

I will start a a thread over on the resto page to keep you all updated

Cheers

I'm watching this saga with growing amazement at just what can be done with knowledge and space. I would be totally lost...and a wee bit apprehensive, if the truth be known. I'd never have the courage to do anything like that...

But I am trying to get a restoration enterprise off the ground up here (N. Lincolnshire) with a couple of lads who currently do 'one-offs' for friends. But the work they do is excellent...and they've already done good, and inexpensive, work on my 912.

And with low overheads, we should be able to keep costs down, especially in these days of Government induced recession!

Flamin heck thats quick progress! I'm presuming you didn't need to bare metal it first? Either that or you don't sleep much.

cheers for the nice comments chaps :)

here's a few more pics from last nights work

Image
All the back end together wih all new rubbers and trim
Image
Also the front bumper and wings are all on to with new seals and all lights wired up but just realised that the bumper needs to come off again so i can drill the holes for the trim as someone welded them up in the past, really should have done this before paint but forgot

Still need to fit the headliner, which im not looking forward to really, anyone done this and got any advise ? i seem to remember you need ALOT of bulldog clips ?

I still have quite a long to do list but it is getting shorter :) and still on target, i want to take it to the VolksWorld show to meet up with some old friends at the end of March and i need to get at least 500 miles on the new rebuilt engine before then to run it in.

by the way your right Timo i dont sleep much  i work 5 day's a week and just about spend every other hour in the workshop.

Rafike your right it is a bit daunting doing a resto, and sometimes i have to walk away and have a cup of tea for 5, but i try to treat it as lots of little jobs and it seems to make it a bit easier

more progress over the last couple of nights,

Carpets are back in,door tops back on with new seals and fuzzy's,all lights wired back up and engine to,front bumper trim on :) and also the fuel flap is back together, even the catch spring went in first time
Also started to fit the headliner with alot of bulldog just needs abit more streching to get the last crease's out.
