oh no, next problem, front tyres too big

Post by gridgway »

So started the day with 3 problems, fixed two, ended up with 3 still to fix.

It seems that the front tyres are too big at 195x65's. The LH front has caught on the inside of the top of the wheel arch and pulled it a little out of shape. There is certainly little clearance.

As a reminder it's a 2.4t with 2.7 RS bits.

Can anyone help...

...is that the normal size tyres for the fronts on the RS?
...if so, how does the RS deal with the lack of clearance?

Is the lip of the wheel arch normally rolled under (like on my 996 RS)?

Thanks

I have 195/65 15's on 6" rims on my RS front wheels and have no clearance issues at all.

I also run 195/65 on 6" rims and have yards of clearance. :?

Is it the same both sides? What is your camber setting?

Graham,
The tyres should fit under he guards without problems.
Are the suspension settings within specification ? - easy to fix.
Are the guards the correct shape / standard ? - harder to fix.
The wheel arch should not have to be rolled under.

Cheers,
Dennis. :)

There is plenty of room for 7" rims under those arches, leta lone 6s. Are there any spacers fitted?

mmm, interesting. I assume that the front wing of the RS was no different to a standard 73 car?

So the tyres could stick out too far, they certainly seem to be "bulgey". The offset could be wrong, the rideheight could be set too low.

Where can I find standard suspension settings?

I'll take some pics after lunch and post them for comment.

I'll look for spacers too, but I cant see them!

So as I am complete porsche novice, where should I jack the front to take a wheel off?

The arches were the same from 1969 - 1989, including the 2.7 RS which were also fitted with 7" rims. The only larger arches were for Turbos, STs, 2.8 RSRs and 3.0 RS. I guess you have spacers fitted or possibly Turbo hubs. The ride height looks a little low, but that should not cause your problem. The usual ride height is set at 25.5" front, 25" rear, measured from the ground to the arch lip

Use a trolley jack under the centre of the front suspension pan, just in front of the fuel tank. There should be a towing eye there.

2.7 RS front wing is no different to '69-'73 911T/E/S wing in terms of width/flare/profile.

As Nick says, a 7x15" Fuchs + tyre should fit without any problem - here's a shot of a 7" Fuchs fitted with a 205/55 x 15" tyre on the front of my old 2.8 twin-plug car - & that was at least 1" lower than the std Factory ride height ...

Do you have original Fuchs or repros ? Some of the repros are offset further out and effectively wider than 7" .

Thanks all for the help so far.

The ride heights are about 1" down at 24.5" at the front and 23.5 at the back.

I still think that the tyres must be too far out. Having had a wheel off, there are no spacers.

So I think either the wheels have a different offset or the hubs are different. It has boxster brakes, are different hubs used to give more clearance for the calipers maybe?

How do I tell whether my fuchs are genuine and what should the offset be?

Sorry for the all questions.

I have taken a few pics here, but the light wasn't fantastic, so I am not sure if they show anything very much.

Here is another pic of my RS. Seems that your wheel is too far out. probably a combination of this and low ride height.

Thanks for the new pic Paul. I tend to agree with you. In the absence of someone saying "aha, that'll be because...", I will need to tak some measurements and compare with someone running the same setup.

I guess I need to establish the wheel offset and then establish the position of the hub face (that the wheel mates to) with regard to a common datum line.

Anyone got any thoughts?

Thanks
Graham
