I put this in technical but had no response so thought I'd try here, hope you don't mind!!

Hello,

I'm just about to rebuild the brakes on my 356B.

I want to replace all the brake lines, I know I can buy the metal brake pipe kits etc but I've got a flaring tool and want to buy a roll of copper nickle pipe a bag of connectors and make them myself to save a bit of money.

Does any one know what size pipe and what size connectors I need.

I know what you need , the pipe 3/16 or 5mm KNUNIFER, I hope thats how its spelt, its copper nickle and the fittings are available from most motor factors as they are a pretty standard thing , if you need some let me know as I have quite a few of a suitable type , I buy them from Wurth, Lastly do not use plain old copper to my mind it does not fatigue well .

I don't know whether you are aware but the cost of having pipes made is peanuts.
I've just had some made up for my A and they were only about £2/3 for each length at a local brake/clutch specialist and this included the long one down the tunnel.
Best to have the old samples for them to work to.

me again , years ago I used to get brake lines made up and they did not cost very much but it was a bit inconvenient so I bought a sykes pickavent tool that does metric and imperial flares in a number of sizes and is a joy to use and its one of those jobs I find very satisfying making and fitting neat brake and fuel lines etc so I can see the attraction of doing it yourself , if you do it properly, especially on single circuit brakes, and the metric size is not 5mm its 4.75mm with the brake male ends being 10mm with a 1mm pitch and ideally a shoulder on the end like the originals . lLastly if you get stuck let me know and I will find what you need.

Well thank you to you all... very helpful, I looked into having them made up but was quoted £10 plus per line so have bought a tool to do it and am actually looking forward to doing it myself now... am I sad!!?
