Sports seats

Post by 101sinbad »

I've managed to get some early..ish recaro seats and now I need to get the correct runners and tilt mechanism.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

What exactly do I need to install these into a 1969 911?

My experience is that the 'consoles' (onto which the seat bolts) are selling for as much as the seats

I fitted replica M471 seats to my rep - and bought relica consoles from RSL-Classic:

http://www.rsl-classic.de/pages_en/clas ... seats.html

I can't say I was blown away with the quality but they're ok and cheaper than originals

Otherwise it's hunt on eBay or the 'esses' for a pair which do come occasionally.

Nice seats by the way 8)

Serhad - theoretically those are ('68 ?) swb seats but there's nothing stopping you fitting them to a lwb model.

The good thing about these is that they require the simpler/lighter swb tilting frames which, when they crop up, tend to be cheaper than the '69-'72 (& '73) versions.

Have you got the lower halves of the Recaro runners ?

If not, that will also add £££ to your expense...

you can try Stefan at :

http://www.classiccarseats.com/brackets.php

maybe he has a solution , I know that he has been in the process of making new slider /tilting frames, at least for his repro seats so maybe they will fit on a real recaro as well.

Shoot him an email ( they are in Texas ),

good luck,

You have purchased a pair of Recaros designed to fit a sort wheelbase 911 with the runners attached to the base of the seat. Your 69 car needs a different design of Recaro. If you can get hold of a later set of tipping frames you can make a bracket to match the seats to the frames. A set of genuine frames will be IRO £500 - £1000 if you can find them.

I'm surprised no one has made an accurate copy of the bases yet as they are a pretty simple design

I brought back one of Stefan's recaro seat frame bases, bracket and sliders from the States a couple of weeks ago. I got it just for the u-brackets that the RSL's and RSR uses.
Looks well made, will post some pictures of it tomorrow.
cheers, Mike.

Hi,

I have responded to your mail about re-trimming and added some pics which may help you.

Canford Classics is the UK supplier of GTS (Stefan's) Porsche products. I hope to have it all on the web site soon.

The GTS tilting frames will not be a direct fit but may be an option, as finding original SWB and LWB original tilting frames can be difficult.

Here is an older pic of one tilting style. The Recaro sport type will use a single side arm.

If NOT have a tilting mech is an option then it may be possible to add some runners direct to the seat and use some fixed mounting frames... such as. These also include the seat belt fixing points.

These are the lightweight brackets with the recaro frame from Stefan in the States.
I'm having the lightweight cross bars re-manufactured at the moment.

Mike

Should your new seat brackets not have four adjuster holes at the front for the RSR rather than three?

Regards
Mike

what, so they break like the originals do

You're right Mike, I have a real set for the driver's seat, but the passenger gonna have to make do with the 3 hole version!

damn :?

swb seats, lwb car, runners, tilters, 3 holes 4 holes ???????? nothing is as easy as it looks.

wouldn't have it any other way.

I want the kids to be able to get into the back so I need the runners and the tilt frames.

should I

a) stick with the swb seats and find a way of fitting them so they tilt.

b) try and find the correct lwb seats and start from scratch.

if the answer is a) how difficult is it to make them fit?
if the answer is b) how do I differentiate between swb and lwb seats

Hi,

Check this thread by James (hot66), for pics of the correct LWB seats and frames.

http://www.ddk-online.com/phpBB2/viewto ... ort+frames

On the LWB version the tilting frames mount to the runners, whilst on SWB seats the runners mount to the seats and then to the frames. The quickest way to determine the difference is SWB seats have the release arm which sticks out the front of the seats (like those in your pictures). Also the SWB seats are not handed unlike the LWB ones.

If you want correct LWB seats with frames expect to pay top dollar, and if restored with restored frames the price goes up. So I suspect the easier option would be to fit the seats you have, but the choice is yours.

Thanks

Alan
