oil pipe failure on my 1971 911T

The aluminium not on the end of my oil return/ feed pipe ( not quite sure which) has split. The whole nut has desintergrated and it needs a new fixing. my questions are:
1. Is it an easy job to change the whole pipe without a major stripdown.
2. Looking through the type-911 website the pipes they supply are all in steel, which seems contrary to corrosion resistance against the aluminium oil tank- am I worrying over nothing?
3. Is it possible to trim the oil pipe in situ and insert a new end with fixing tightened with a hoseclip type fastening- i guess it is a low pressure feed.
Really appreciate your advice.
thanks jim

Hi Jim,
I presume you are referring to the oil line which connects to the front of the oil tank and then goes off around the gear box. If so, to replace this requires the removal of the LH heat exchanger. If you mean the other oil pipe, which screws into the bottom of the oil cooler and then mid way along the oil tank, these are a lot easier to replace. These are PN 901.107.301.12 and if necc I have plenty in stock. Either way, drop the oil get the correct tools and you will be good to go.
From 73 (ish) Porsche got round the problem of having to replace the whole (longer) oil pipe by making it in two sections.
If you get stuck give me a call

Hi Alan,
Guess what, it is the front one......I have been trying to preserve my heat exchangers, the cost of replacement ones and the chance of broken studs has kept me away.
My other issue is that I bought the car as a non runner and purely on its original condition and the bodywork, I have yet to run it up, so I am still in the stage where I am not exactly sure what I have got.
Any thoughts on the using a motorsport hoseclip arrangement as a temporary solution.
If it needs the heat exchangers removing, I am tempted to drop the eng and g box- detail the eng bay, freshen the motor and recon the gearbox.
Thanks jim

Hi Jim,
I had to replace exactly this pipe last year for the same reason. I was fortunate that my heat exchanger came off no problem and I replaced the MFI drive belt while I was in there (that doesn't apply to you I think). I got the pipe from Bert @Berlyn. Much cheaper than Porsche prices and a little heavier duty. Personally, I wouldn't risk a 'bodge job' as if the pipe let's go completely, you'll dump the engine oil immediately and trash the motor- these things never happen at idle!

Very sound advice Dave.
It is not worth taking short cuts.

Hi again,
I can do but it is not something I do commercially. There are several companies/people which offer this service (I can email them to you if required) and I am sure they will help, but I do know that with recent changes in the products used to strip these wheels, it has made things more complicated. By that I mean, the products used to strip these fuchs is not the best for the environment, hence many firms now no longer being able to offer stripping services. Even simply commercial degreasing is becoming more difficult.
