Hello there,

I'm toying with the idea of getting me a 912 for general run around duties/daily driver (short commute but in traffic) and I'm just after some general advice.

Could I get me a nice reliable car for under £10k these days? If so, what could I expect for this sort of money? Something tidy? And importantly, something reliable?

What is the range of prices these cars now command

Or should I just get me a second-hand Golf diesel?

Any advice welcome.

For 10K you should get a really good 912. I bought mine end of last summer and it cost a bit less than that, although it did take me a while to find the right car. Mine has excellent body and chassis, rebuilt Harry Pellow engine, fuchs etc. On the downside it had later front seats and cracked dash but no big problems. It seems there are many priced above the 10K figure these days but I'm not sure all of them warrant their asking price. If I was paying more than 10K I would expect a concours car with loads of history and that needed nothing tbh. For £8 - 10k I would expect something in very good all round condition, good/rebuilt engine/box, no major problems but may not be concours. The golf would probably be that bit more reliable but dull as dish water imho. Good luck with the search. Oh and I saw this last night, might be worth a look
