Has anyone got a known matching numbers 1972 (E-series, external oil flap) here? BTW, it's a coupe.

I'm interested to know whether it's likely that my car still has it's original powerplant, and wondered if anyone here has a near chassis number with a near engine number to mine. Initially I assumed that it wasn't the original engine as the numbers are quite different, until it occurred that the same engines would be spread across Targas and coupe's.

Engine 6221595

Chassis looks odd, but I suppose someone had to have number 1000 ... makes it within the last 150 or so made I think .

I think the only way to be sure is to get the build info from Porsche. With the info I got back it confirmed matching numbers chassis / engine & transmission , which was nice

Barry - from the 911E Registry in the US the closest VIN to yours is:

911 220 1090 fitted with engine no. 6221681

- which would put that engine currently fitted to yours in the right range.

I would think that it's highly likely that it is the original engine.

I've got 9112200045 with engine number 6220128 which is matching. Same model as yours. Shows similar difference between chassis and engine number. Yours looks in the right ballpark.

Is your car a UK RHD? If so and it was imported through AFN I might be able to find out for you.

Thanks Ian, but it was a LHD, and was converted in the eighties I think.

I didn't want to pay out for a Porsche letter if it was clear that the original engine had been lost.

Now it looks as though it's quite possible that it is the correct engine (or at least, a good chance), and the fact that it now appears to have had the rear muffler grill fitted, I think it would be nice to find it's original spec. (I know it was in Leaf Green for a start .... ).

Just registered: Ian, if you did as well, you'd have the earliest E-series on there .

I wonder how many RHD ones came before yours? Yours could easily be in the teens as far as RHD is concerned by the looks of things?

Pretty sure it is one of the first RHD as it was manufactured in September 1971.

I've just registered too. Talking of close VIN numbers, that one above is just one away in sequence from mine

Checking if my car is matching # is something I've still not got around too.
I know there have been threads on that before - could someone point me to a link with a dummies guide to contacting Porsche etc.? Cheers.

There are very few UK Es on that registry - maybe we should post in the non members section to encourage more people to get their details on there...

I have 1077, its Kieron Higgins old car. It's only 77 from yours

I got a letter/certificate of authenticity from Porsche and the matching engine number is 6221695.

So I would say that the engine number you give is correct numbers match.

Just seen that James's 1090 engine number 1681 is out of sequence with 1077 engine number 1695 ?

Strange, 1077 was built July 1972 and is RHD.
(I wonder if this happened during build if there was a last minute spec change say to S engine and the spare E engine was out of sequence with the remaining build?)

Paul, I think that was the only exclusion they particularly mention .

Actually, I think if all of these 'E's go on, it'll make a real difference to the number from the U.K. they've got : certainly 2.4's.

I know it's cropped up before, and even worse, did it myself on the Gulf Blue car, but forgotton who, where and how much .

Well my application was accepted. Another '72 2.4 in the registry.
Check it out though, the next on the list is a rather dubious entry.
How did he get in?
