DDK - Die Deutschen Klassiker

Hi all,

I know there are a myriad guides etc available, but I would like some general info from genuine owners, as will hopefully will be buying mid 2008.

I nearly bought one 5 years ago that needed some work for £4k ish, and looking at prices, they range from £3-10k. I cannot justify spending at the top end of this range, but will be looking at spending 6-7k.

What should I expect for this money; could I get:

solid MOT'd car with no major rot or mechanical probs, but might need a tidy/interior work ?

Also, what are the major headaches that I can expect from daily use...having owned several air-colled VW's and a 914, you get to find that everyone suffers from the same probs - the 914 was the rear brake calipers, leaking pushrod tube seals, sloppy gears (tailshift) etc. These are the sort of issues I would like to know about before buying a 'twelve'.

So, what do I need to know...?

that pistonheads car - 4k ?? is it more difficult to spray around a number plate?

Buy the best car you can afford and get it inspected, no matter what you think you know this will be the best couple of hundred pounds you will ever spend. Rust and engine will be the big spenders both of which can be hard to identify. Buying a resto bucket o rust is a sure way to loose much ££. 12's might be cheaper to buy than a 911 but are not cheaper to repair or run.

With prices reaching mid teens on occasion your budget is roughly half a minter so shop carefully, you should be able to get a solid car but you will have to spend money on it, I would budget for 2k in the first year, if that's not an option then think hard.

Not trying to put you off they are great cars, but there is some awful junk out there commanding high prices, buyer beware.

Thanks for the advice...I might consider getting a Ferrari !! Is that what other people's experience is..that it costs 2k running costs !? I new somone that ran a 308GTB on less than that !

I had a Ferrari once.. scared the living sh*t out of me.. I was new to all this classic stuff and having owned a Britsh pig the AM DBS V8 I thought I could conquore the world with a Dino.. well I got it asked a few SO CALLED experts and they managed to put me right off and I sold it to a guy who knew what he was doing with it.. It was a resto car for sure and needed lots doing.. I only made it as far as getting it running..and sold it..


later I thought I would give another go and bought a 356 and a 912.. so now I learnt alot more first before I got stuck in.

so in other words do lots of home work, it makes running and restoring the cars more fun, rewarding and well informed than just a pun in the dark..

I do miss that DBS but again that was an expensive car for bits.. Shame they don't seam to have risen in price as other classic's when you get one right they are a crazy car to own..

Not so much will cost 2k to run it just making the point that you need a few quid in reserve for when things go wrong. If you spend every last penny you have on the car then you may end up having a car you can't drive.

Bit pessimistic but hey...
