Reversing Lights... should mine light up?

Another typical “newbie” question…
Should the reversing light on the back on my 912 light up when I put the car into reverse? (they don’t at the moment)
I have not been able yet to get underneath to see if there is a switch on the gearbox.

Yep and mine was full of water
I've never sorted that job out yet, one for winter... There is a switch on the gearbox.

Well i have taken the rear clusters off to see if its the bulbs.
So heres the next dumb newbie question...
how do i get to the bulb itself? I dont wanna force anything and break it.

The 3 white plastic parts (with the electrical connectors) are carefully 'levered'* out of the metal housing - these are the bulb holders.
Use a blunt screwdriver to lever against the copper 'spring' which is at the end of the bulb holder closest to the chrome rim of the housing.

thanks guys. i knew it would be as simple as that its just knowing how before you go and break something.
took all of 1 second to do it once you replied.
Well, after all that, it doesnt seem to be the bulbs
Not sure what to check next. i guess i need to get under it and find the switch on the gearbox and check the wires have not disconnected themselves?

and also I think there is also another switch on the tunnel area under the gear stick..

did manage to get under the car at the weekend and locate the switch.
was on my own and didnt have any mirrors handy so not a great deal i could do other than see that the wires were connected! Next time will take the wires off the switch and touch them together and see if (hope that!!) the lights come on.

If you do touch the wires together and lights work fine, and then try the switch and it works fine, sometimes the pin which is pushed outwards by the reverse gear selector rod gets kinked and then sticks in it's bore. I replaced it with a 3.5mm drill bit (needs to be hardened steel) cut off to the correct length (about 25mm)-works fine now.
-(BTW, I don't remember any oil escaping when my reverse switch was unscrewed but my 'box was standing on the bellhousing -I reckon oil loss would be minimal as the hole is very small, it certainly wouldn't gush out).
