Hi all,

Myself and a friend, maybe planning on offering a small scale Porsche re-trimming service to others and have been talking with my upholster for some time about this. He is a classically trained upholster mainly working with antiques but has turn his hand to working on Porsches. We have been looking at doing leather bound steering wheels, headliners, hand cut and fitting carpets, re-trims, amongst other things. He will soon be doing my recaro sports for my own car in full leather and is currently working on the rear seats for Luke Hudson's car. These will be re-trimmed this week to match the amazing fronts seats that Luke bought from the US (see pic).

I also had him re-trim another single recaro sport in full leather which I picked up today. The results are great, please see the before and after pics.

Oh yes, very nice

I need my 914s done, need to save up me pennies 1st tho.

looks nice and tight there is lot more to trimming that people think nice job..

Did you ever get a price for re-trimming a standard set of 914 seats from him?

If not what sort of price would you think it would cost?

David, I did ask him but it is hard to estimate a price without him seeing them and also knowing what you want them covered in. Maybe if you or someone else with 914 would like to pop round. We would be more than happy to help.

Nice work.

Just one question though - why include the 'Recaro' badge ? As far as I am aware, Porsche-supplied Recaro seats never had the Recaro logo on them.

I have some '75 Anniversary seats in my car that are beginning to show their age.

Fraser, those seats were real scabby indeed, but now the feel and smell of the leather is great. Silver911, I am sure we can do what ever you want, drop me a PM if you want to find out more.

Andy, I do believe that some of the early recaro sport seats did have the recaro badge on them. There was a thread on this on PP a little while ago and the final consensus was that they were original.

I hope to have some more pics of Luke's seats soon and also my own recaros.

Very nice work ..... but !

The leather looks so new though ! Is that how the leather would have looked originally ? Will that age to look like the old one does eventually or will it always look like a modern seat ? I'm inclined to prefer the look of the old one if the cord centres had been redone in cord ? You know , a bit of "patina" , character , call it what you will.

Last year I looked at importing a 73 911S from arizona that was an "elite concours" car. Every clip , bolt and pipe had been renewed and it had new carpets , upholstering , headlining etc. The car is basically new. I couldn't afford the import duty in the end 'cos it wasn't over 30years old. But I since realised that I didn't really want a new car , I like old ones !! there's something I like about stuff that's seen a bit of action , that's lived a bit.

That’s very true John, but with that seat I wanted it full leather but it could have done to match the original, ie with cord and vinyl or what ever. He also has a source in Germany to buy original material but it is very expensive in comparison. He recently repaired a single black recaro sport from James’s silver RHD 2.4S which obviously had to look as original as possible. The results were great. Maybe James could post a pick.

I've been out of action for the last 4 months so am late to post but I can confirm the job was excellent and it matches the none repaired seat.

What the upholsterer did was take the back section out of the seat and use that to recover the fronts while replacing the back. The result is great and with no loss to patina.

I'll try to get a picture, however it would make no difference because you would not be able to tell the difference.
