'Martini RSR' Engine and Gearbox

Post by Mike »

Will now sell the engine and gearbox coming in the 'Martini' RSR replica, more on this thread:

http://www.ddk-online.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=15294

Its a 3.0 mfi unit built on SC aluminium cases, with bored out magnesium stacks, 40mm throttle bodies and a modified to RSR spec Bosch injection pump. Its a well known engine in the US, but Gib Bosworth bought the engine and box ready built from California and does'nt know much about it, other than its a claimed 250hp and has'nt been used much.

Neil Bainbridge did a leakage test and pronounced it in great condition although after test driving it thought it more like 240hp, but put that down to the naff USA fuel and the fact it was running a little lean.

The gearbox is a late 915 with a Quaife LSD which again on test felt great.

Its the modified mfi sytem that Gib built that makes it special, the throttle response felt amazing and it pulled like a train.

Price is £7,500 for the engine and £2000 for the gearbox.

Gib is trying to find out more, will update if he does.
cheers, Mike.

Appears that the engine could have as little as 5000 miles on it,
and the gearbox was rebuilt by Patrick Motorsport 2000 miles ago.
cheers, Mike.

Have had a little more from the States which has helped Neil guesstimate more about what's inside, and answer some of the questions that have been asked.
Apparently the pistons are by Arias, a well known American high performance specialist.

Neil thinks that from the way it felt its definitely not standard CR which would be 8.5:1. It more like 9.5:1, could even be 10:1 but Neil thought it turned over a little to easily for that.
As for cam profiles, Neil would put money on them being G80's by Garrettson, which are racier than an 'S' cam but not as extreme as 'RSR' cams.

Spoke more to Gib and he said he found it in a 74 Carrera, part of a collection of several cars belonging to a guy in California who said it had done less than 5000 miles since having it built, presumably to replace the right 2.7 engine? Its on 82 SC cases with an upgraded oil pump, 39/38 head ports and seems to have a lot of torque.

All I know is it went like stink and apart from the exhaust was a quiet as a mouse, not a rattle or squeak from anywhere, so really do believe its low miles. But at the end of the day when Neil drove it he did not hold back and was very impressed, he just wanted to start tuning it there and then!

The mfi system Gib had made, he is a masters engineering graduate. Its been done using 1970 magnesium stacks bored out to 46-47mm at the top down to 40mm at the bottom to meet with the 40mm throttle bodies.
The pump is the 2.2E model that is best suited for conversion to RSR type. This is done by fitting a 3.0 liter MB space cam which is then fuel flow tested to match the RS fuel delivery, but at a higher flow rate.

There has been interest in the engine and box separately, but would much prefer to see them stay together, so will do a deal.
cheers, Mike.

Gearbox sale pending to Derek, so now splitting them up.

Will let the engine go now for £6000 which is a good deal for something a little special.
cheers, Mike.
