Hi all,

I'm looking for the top bearing on the steering column for a '72 911, the one which stops the steering wheel wobble slightly

I understand you can get them porsche but I'd rather pay the mortgage this month ( I know, call me dull but....)

does any one have one?

Funnily enough 5 minutes ago I managed to spring the inside off my bearing and sprayed tiny ball bearings covered in grease all over the inside of the car and over me I have heard that they are very expensive. Sorry can't help but wanted to get rid of a bit of frustration!

You sure its the bearing? I remember something about a plastic shim that breaks down over time. There's endless amounts about it on Pelican.

Nick, the broken plastic applies to 911 73 - on. All earlier cars use the very different and expensive bearing, it is larger in diameter OD, smaller in diameter ID than the later bearing. Time for a conversion kit ?

I'm in the same trouble with my 2,2 T year 1970, play on column and no signs of upper bearing at all.

Does it really exist conversion kit not to buy the expensive 914.347.711.00? Crazy price for small balls between two guides...

Re bearing 914 347 711 00. No need to buy a new one.....just clean up and buy some new ball bearings.......see link below

I unfortunately think not to have upper big part, only lower!! Is it possible to get it separately?

Anyway looking at useful link now I have doubt if part of the bearing is still in the column..

I'm gonna check again in the garage...

Just a thought (which you can read, shake your head in dismay and then summarily disregard as the late-night ramblings of an imbecile): my steering wheel showed play at the top of the column. It was down tot he spring and collar that holds the bearing in position. They either get left out or the collar is fitted the wrong way round (very common error), resulting in play that feels like the bearing's shot. The bearing by itself will not support the column adequately.

Like I say, read, shake head in dismay and disregard...

In the meanwhile I took my steering wheel from the bodyshop where the car is going to be painted: actually I have the upper column bearing...it was so dirty and I didn't recognize it.
On the steerng boss I found the spring, now I have to try to reassemble and check if there is "play"

Ps I fear that the real cause of the play is the shape of the momo boss vs original steerng wheel
