Is there a difference between a 911 and 912 rev counter?

Am i right in thinking that the 911 goes up to 8000 and the 12 to 7000?

Correct.

Also the 912 tacho is configured for 4 cyl engines whereas the 911 version is configured for 6 cylinders.
