as some of you know my 914 came to me with full race harnesses fitted i would like to fit ordinary seatbelt. do i have to remove the harnesses or am i able to have both ?

Would probably depend on where Roger used as the pick-ups for the harness's Helen.

Best to post a picture of where the harness is attached, and then the knowledgable 914 folk will be able to tell you. I sat in the car last year, but honestly can't remember what Roger had done.

The harnesses use the floor mounting points - same as the seat belts, but you'll need to remove the harness bar that runs in front of the rear window as this is mounted on the upper seat belt mounting points. (You'll need to remove the central fixing point for the the harness bar too which is bolted through the cab/engine bulkhead.

Also, I gave you the inner trim panels that fit on the inner side of the sail panels which will need to be refitted once the harness bar is removed and lap and diagonal belts fitted.

Alternatively you could use 3 point harnesses (rather than four point) as these can be bought with a single point clasp rather than the four you have on each at present. You could then still use the harness bar to fix these to.

Is it too early to ask what price you want for the harnesses and the harness bar, should you go ahead and remove them, Helen?

If you need the 'normal' belts and buckles from mine, they could be part of the deal...

got new seat belt already. but was rather hoping i would be able to fit them and still have the harnesses in place for trackday use, (well i live in hope of doing the odd track day) it dosn't sound like this is going to be possable

Ah - I misunderstood the bit about wanting to keep the harnesses PLUS the belts.

It has to be possible, perhaps with a bit of creative welding around the top inertia belt mounts, so that they mount onto an extension plate from the harness bar, rather than directly onto the original points.

Alternatively, there is a manufacturer of harnesses (3 point) that have inertia recoil on the shoulder straps - I just can't remember the manufacturer name...

I think one of the 914 crowd on here has a harness bar and inertia seats belts fitted (in order to fit a baby seat).

Could you not use the same mounting points in the car but use longer seatbelt bolts? (Don't know if there are any safety issues here)

I used to use the eye bolts provided with my Sabelt harness to secure the normal seat belt. Come track time I hooked in the harnesses (shoulder anchorages to the rear seats) and left the 3 point hanging down

I didn't realise you wanted both either.

What you want to do is entirely feasible as the harness bar is bolted into the upper belt mounting points. However, I doubt you would be able to fit inertia reel belts - you'll probably have to use static. Simply undo each upper harness bar bolt in turn and fix the seat belt upper mounting in place on each side. Remove the 4 point harnesses from each of their fixing points - very simple to remove as they have spring loaded clips - and then click the new belts into the lower eye bolts at floor level. Voila!

They are 3 or 4 point harnesses, with an inertia reel mechanism on the shoulder straps, so that you can lean forwards in your seat and reach whatever it is that you would normally reach forwards for in your 3 point seat belt

They lock just like a normal seat belt, and there is an electrical option, so that you can lock them at the push of a button (though it doesn't say how you reach the button to turn it back off).

I have both fitted in my 14. I made my own harness bar and picked up on the top seatbelt bolt holes, all i did was add the original seat belts to the same fixing and works a treat. Am looking to make a small batch of polished stainless ones as someone else is after one.

you can see the standard seatbelt on the passenger side.

it passes MOT's and is great to get the kids seats in they love it!!!

Wouldn't fancy banging my head on that bolt in an accident !

fair comment drummerboy I nevcer actual intend to have an accident when i drive but i should sort that out.
