Hi, I'm concidering buying a 914 for a bit of summer fun, what should I be looking out for, what are the weak / strong points, best engine, 'box etc.
Are there any good ones on the market, I can't seem to find many,
all advice appreciated, Nick.

Biggest problem is rust, most of the cars are well over 30 years old.
Main area is under the battery area in the engine bay, having said that floors, and wings can be bad also
Best advice is take someone with you when you buy it or post plenty of photos here when you do find one you want to buy.
Don't be put off though -The 914 is a brilliant design. Mid engined, targa top, all round discs, 2 huge luggage areas (I say huge compared with a MR2 or MGF) -and of course handsome if unusual looks :)

I was in a similar position to yourself when I was looking. I knew very little of pitfalls and what to look out for. I was told 1973 onwards 914 (4) two litre engine with as many options as possible was best with 901 gearbox. Two litre engine aparently has the Porsche heads on it (so ive been told, could be wrong :? ). Or if you have the cash go the whole hog and get a 914-6 :)

Luckily I was offered help by a couple of forum members, one of whom went to view the car I now own. I was also given details on someone who had viewed car with intention of turning it into a 914-6 but he decided against it. I was lucky to have several viewpoints on the car.

I posted quite a few pics of cars i was considering before settling on my current car. Others views and opinions realy helped me avoid buying an absolute dog.

What I would say, Just as Fourteener has, Is that it is a 30 + year old car so be aware of possible areas of concern. Arm yourself with as much knowlege as you can. Oh... and be prepared to travel for right car. If the prospect of restoring one scares you I would try to buy one at the top end of your buget (i had to revise my buget a couple of times). You definately get what you pay for. I viewed 3 in Scotland. One needed full resto and was way over priced (could have possibly been better as a parts car). Other two were nice but not solid enough to justify price. My car came from Gwent (I live in Glasgow) and while not perfect It is undeniably solid and standard.

I have had my 14 for 5 months and LOVE it. Always gets noticed and I am always being asked "what is it?" Two seater, two big storage areas (one of which targa roof fits in and you can still fit the shopping in there too) Cheap insurance and a whole lotta fun.

Like the Nike advert said "just do it"
