After speaking with Paul Herbert about the best way of tackling this job, I followed his method of heating the tube up with a MAP torch and slowly bending it at a 45deg angle.
The idea is a AN-16 bung is welded on and then a 45deg fitting completes the 90deg necessary for clearing the trailing arm.
This is a spare cooler to practise on and it did kink in 2 places but to be fair I think this would still be ok as the internal area is not reduced but just ovaled.
I have posted some pictures of the cooler on the engine (loosely fitted) - I think when the bung is welded some of the 'mouth' will need cutting off for extra clearance as it might protrude too much into the trailing arm area when the oil line is connected.

I'd be very surprised if it was possible to bend that thin tube without kinks..it needs to be loaded inside really with resin or sand..

But why not just fit a 90degree bend?

what David says, why not just cut and shut it with a pre bent bit of pipe?

There is Clewett racing in the US who modifies the cooler like this...Which is a fairly tricky job



It has always bothered me the interruption in flow of the sharp 90deg angle and when I spoke with Paul he said he converts them by bending them as shown above.
All the engineers I approached to fabricate + TIG something similar to the Clewitt design shied away from the job.
There is no room to weld around the tube and the pipe needs to be bent away from the cooler, welded and then bent back.

The stock 914-6 cooler looks like this and the flow angle was designed like this from the factory

But why not just fit a 90degree bend?

This is my attempt.The ally welding was done by a guy called Mark Solloway in South Wales (Its a while back,but he made rads and oil tanks for the rally guys).Its unbelievable,but the original 914/6 cooler in the pics was on a 911 engine with an adapter pipe!!.The owner was delighted to swap it for a 911 one,not knowing what he had!! I need to drop the height of the bracket slightly,now that I have the benefit of the original to compare.
