Thread size?

Hi all
Can anybody tell me the thread size on my generator (pulley side).
Would like to clean it up a bit before a new nut goes on.
The generator is the 90mm type

I don't know the thread size but can't you determine this from the new nut ?

I could do yes - but i need to know the size so that i can buy a thread die of the correct size.

Hi Darran: a while ago Alan.UK used a 16x1mm die for his.
If you measure the O/D of the thread, and count as many threads as you can over a set distance, divided by that distance, that should confirm what you've got. I.e if you can measure over 8mm and you've got eight threads, it is 1mm pitch. Other possibles for these larger sizes would be 1.25mm or 1.5, but these look quite chunky. The only reason for counting as many threads as possible is to make measurement easier.
Chances are, if it measures more or less 16mm overall, it'll be the 16x1mm die you need. Tracy Tools will do them: 2 Mayors Avenue, Dartmouth, Devon. TQ6 9NF 01803 833134 E-mail: Tracy Tools @ aol.com
If you are just tidying one thread up, just get the Carbon Steel option: the HSS / High Speed Steel is usually for higher volume use.

BTW, just for reference, you can buy thread gauges for £3-4 which are pretty handy to have knocking about: coupled with some traditional verniers (£15) you can find all threads: pretty usful if you are ordering new nuts/bolts and want the correct ones.

Hi Darran, is (I presume) asking about a 912 which is different than any of the 911 versions.

Thanks for the info Barry.
i've just ordered a tap and die set. I was told from someone on pelican that it's 12 x 1.5 - i'll see if thats right when i receive the set and post the info for future reference.
If its wrong i'll try a 16, but i think its smaller than that.
I have been thinking i should get a thread gauge - this is the 2nd time in the last month i could have used one.
Alan, the car is a 68 912 and the generator is the 90mm unit (the smaller one).
