Hi, Can anyone advise me please. The petrol pump on my 1970 911T RHD is currently a 3 pipes at 1 end design. I need to replace it and have been advised that the straight through type, ie 2 pipes, 1 pipe at each end is usable.
However with this type how do I connect a return to the petrol tank?

Welcome to DDK.

The new pump you are referring to does not have a return of the pump itself, it a simple in and out design. You can still use the return to the tank by simply connecting the pipes that form the return. If I remember rightly a 70 T has the pump up by the tank and there is also a fuel return from the engine bay. If this is the case there will be a T piece up by the pump in the return line which is basically the fuel return from the motor and the pump.

I personally prefer to use the original pump. What’s wrong with yours?
Other advice would be, if you fit an inline pump like you are suggesting also fit a fuel regulator so you can set the PSI. Carbs are very sensitive to PSI. Also change all the fuel lines while you are there.

Hi Allan, Thanks for your reply. My existing pump is working but extremely noisy and I understand they cannot be rebuilt.
New one from any source so far is around £400, far too expensive. Autoatlanta reckon it is ok to use the straight thro pump (I think from 912) but give no advice as to how to fit.

Yeah ! My fuel pump whines for a while when I first turn the key.. surely a sign it needs some attention!

I have fixed several fuel pumps that were otherwise useless. A lot of the problems are due to the bushes becoming 'bunged' up and the springs are no longer effective in creating a good contact. With regards to excessive noise I would also check the rubber mountings. If the pump is pushed up against something it will make a vibrating noise - worth checking first.



I have fitted/seen several inline pumps on 911s. These were fitted in the engine bay (with no problems). I then used a T pipe from the pump to the carbs and this then acts as the fuel return.
