Can anyone recommend how best to fit rear seat belts to 1973 911 RS?

there are lap belt mounts in the chassis already I belive, 2 on the tunnel, 2 on the side panels. They are just blocked off with plastic caps. You can buy lap belts from Quickfit SBS for not a lot of cash

Hi Michael,

Quickfit also do 3 point belts. Although obviously you would need retractors (maybe from a 993?) and get them to appropriately reinforce the shelf. If there is any rust in the shelf (outer corners to 1/4 panels) then don't do it, I really want to do mine, but just have to accept not taking the kids because my shelf it not exactly as it left the factory.

You could also get fixed i.e non inertia reel 3 point belts for the rear, which may look more authentic and less intrusive into the trim. You would need to make sure these are adjusted properly each time though.

I would go for the later setup from the 80's 911's if your wanting the diagnals, I plan on using this setup on my car however I think it will require some welding to the rear parcel shelf to add the bracket and support for the real.

If your car is a genuine RS however im not sure id want to start welding in bits that dont belong on it. I dont think there is a bolt on solution for the diagnals because the early parcel shelf is not strong enough to hold the reals without extra support.

I'm in the same boat as you. I really don't want to mess up my rear panel but there is no way I'd put my little treasure in the back without a diagonal so we cannot use it for all three family members. If you come up with a workable solution please post on here as I'd sure like to know what it is!!!!

Why not fit a 3 point harness? The single bolt mounting would not be out of place on the parcel shelf of an RS.

You don't need to weld brackets for rear seat melt mounts on the rear shelf. SBS quickfit do a nice fitting kit with some massive spreader plates. All you need to do is drill a hole for the bolt to go through ( this is not an easy job with the rear screen fitted though, you will need a compact 90degree adapter for your drill.

I have both a 993 rear 3 point mech & an SBS quickfit one. The SBS needs to be mounted horizontally for it to work.

The reason why I posted the topic was because one of the top early 911 experts has recommended that the back bulkhead is not strong enough to fix to on its own and that it's necessary to fit a cross member by removing the engine and rear window. I'm not really interested in the lap belt option for obvious reasons.

If your happy to have welding done then I would go for having a 3.2 rear parcel shelf panel fitted if your serious about the the belts performing as designed. bolt on kits are all well and good but theres only one way to find out if they are really upto the job. Im not sure if SBS are required to do any crash testing to sell there kits and it may be worth asking that question. But I would have have greater confidence in the original equipment working better than aftermarket bolt on stuff.

The later 80's shelf is very similar to the early one but is much stronger and has the inertia reel mounts already fitted and will look the same once covered with the rear parcel shelf cover with the obvious addition of the inertia reels.

I would think it would be posible to fit one of these with the engine in (well covered) but will defiantly require rear window removal.

The RS already has a seat belt fixing on the shelf. Porsche thought it was strong enough.

I've just received a pair of belts from Quickfit today. They look OK but the belt is coming off the bottom of the reel which I don't think is right and they have given me 2.5m of belt on each one - far too much, I asked for much less. I'll let you know how I got on. I had holes drilled and reinforcement welded in before the car was painted. Anyone know what the original thickness of the parcel shelf was?

as mentioned, personally I'm happier with the 993 reel I have fitted.

Congrats on your new purchase.

This has nothing to do with belts but do you have a copy of 911 and Porsche World July 2000 edition? I think you may find it interesting.
