Anyone have any tips on re-fitted the bloody spring mechanism that keeps the rear boot up???
I have just nearly cut my finger off trying to get the brackets back in place holding the torsion spring in place following one of the welded brackets snapping off.
Anyone converted to gas strut?

Ouch! I saw this and remembered a thread on 914.com. It doesn't help much but does mention a specific tool used for the job.

Hi, I have just purchased the gas strut conversion from camp914. Craig the owner of camp is the most helpful guy I have ever had to deal with. Although I was lucky as my son was in the States and therefore I had no postage costs for the strut kit. However, I have purchased items direct from camp since and he only charges UPS mail costs, they arrived in UK 3 days later.
If you want to know how to reconnect the originals I suggest you go to Pelican Parts's website and look at the technical pages there, it tells all, even a design to make the specialist tool which one evidently needs to do the job. I took one look and decided on the gas struts which come with a very good diagram and instructions. Very easy to install.

Cheers for that I had actually looked on camp914 website and seen these and its the shipping that puts me off. Do you know what the original strut came from? I can make the brackets up just wondered as the strut must be a bog standard strut from something.

Only drawback to the camp kit I see is that you can see the bolts in the panel gap between the boot lid and the rear wing. welding isn't really an option if your paint is in anyway good.

One way to fit struts is up through the engine bay opening, so when open they are virtually parallel to the boot. Am trying to find a photo of a german 914-6 that did it this way.

The bolts provided are quite small and I doubt if they will be very noticable when fitted as the rubber seal will hide most, if not all, of the heads.

Could you share the sizing / spec of the struts with us all?
I'd love gas struts front and rear (I fill-up the tank with the bonnet propped-open on the back of my head), and I'm happy to arrange brackets, and to scour scrap-yards for matching struts, but I'm faced at the moment with too much trial-and-error in prospect to look into it seriously. A set of measurements would be just the ticket to get me going.

Unfortunately I only went for the rear struts as I found by moving the springs one notch, the front ones made the bonnet stay up quite easily.

Unfortunately, my bonnet springs are on the last notch and still floppy
When I release my bonnet catch (from the front of the car), the springs have the ability to raise the bonnet to approximately horizontal, and that's it.
I'll continue to call it 'character' for the time-being.

How visible are they when the rubber seal is in place?
