im just getting RAC to replace my 914 screen in a few days - is there anything I should know that they wont know that they should do (does that make sense?)

I'm not sure, but I've got a feeling that the Pilkington ones break soon after fitting, so check the make. Also you need to ask one of the regular '14'ers about the screen trim: I seem to remember someone saying there're some plastic spacers or clips (or something) that need replacing each time.

Sorry to be so vague, but this was a two year old conversation I'm trying to remember .

I know a different model, but I had all fun n games with front and rear screens on the 911.....particularly the quality of the seals. If they are ropey you might prefer to replace them - just make very sure you're not getting pattern items!!

Few things to bear in mind. ALL companies run bonus schemes and fitters rush. Not something that you'll want on your baby. They would not have seen a 914 before so will need to be very careful removing the chromes. If done wrong they will bend them. Check before and after on the chromes. They are pushed in aswell and not wacked in. This distorts them badly. If you have any rust coming up from behind the chromes i can guarentee there is rust present on the aperture. Oh the glass will probably be their own make and not likely Pilkington.



If it were me i'd pop the car down to the nearest dept and let them remove the trims first. Then if you need any clips or need rust attending to you can leave the screen in place and make arrangements. If they take your screen out and you need work you have a car that can't be driven. Any rust on aperture HAS to be looked at. If not it will reappear and break the screen from the inside out. Like a big zit!

Finally ensure your cars looked after. seat covers , bonnet cover , vents taped up etc. etc. I have seen some horror stories over the years so be careful. Oh by the way i work for the biggest windsceen company in UK and have done for 16 years hence knowing what i do.

A real pants job that they must take time over.

A customer of ours had claimed on the insurance and our local RAC man couldn't change one at our workshop
We had to send it to the main depot. They had to get Jim to do it (who ever he is)
as he was the only guy old enough to remember what to do.

thanks for all the info guys - will bear it in mind, i'll probably take the trim off myself first.

There is some rust to deal with around the screen base so I got a quote to do this as there is a body shop round the corner from the rac place (chose it on purpose). they are going to sort the rust out first then ill get the screen popped in just a stone's throw away. At least I can tie the two jobs up.

I don't mean to tar everyone with the same brush as that isn't fair but most places are purely modern supply and fit and each job is timed. It isn't the fitters fault as he's given 7-10 jobs a day and you get a slice of that time. Gone are the days of giving a job the correct time it needs i'm afraid. In the case of direct glazed screens if every procedure isn't followed it can cause masses of problems. With the job being "in branch" your far less lightly to get a rushed job. Oh and before anyone thinks i'm having a pop at one particular company i'm not. It's as much a problem in the company i work for as any other and the reason i'm employed is purely to deal with issues around fitting quality and standards and BS procedures.

Finally if you haven't done it already i'd remove the inner a post trims before it has the screen removed . Just to be on the safe side
