Yes, another 380mm wheel - as per the other wheel, Manfred Herring said this is a genuine RS wheel - simmilarly well restored - butterfly could do with a little tidying but is also very good.

All I know about wheels was from Andy so I guess I wasn't quite listening hard enough. Sorry...........

One question: look at the date stamp! I don't get it. Your other wheel is stamped 73 and this one 86. Andy..............help???????????

I can not find this partsnumber in the parts catalog? The only wheel that is close is the wheel for the S model 901 347 081 10, the only wheel for the RS in the catalog are the two part numbers I put in the other steering wheel tread. The parts number on this wheel looks strange. Can Andy please explain to me where this partsnumber can be found?

John - the part number is 914 347 087 10.

Although I have had probably over 40 380mm 914/4 & 914/6 steering wheels, I have not personally had one with this part number.

The 3 key features which identify whether a particular 380mm steering wheel is of the type* fitted by the Factory to a 2.7 RS are:

1) Flat (ie non-recessed) centre to the hub where the part number & date code are stamped
2) Flat (no recess) edge to the protruding splined portion on the rear of the hub
3) A raised 'lip' around the edge of the wider part of the hub on the rear

* The only way that you can state that a particular wheel is from an RS is if you know that it came from a particular car & that it was the original steering wheel as fitted by the Factory...

You are the expert ! I have read the link, very interesting about the recess. I also read the partsnumber on this wheel wrongly, I read it as 81, not 87. This wheel then either is from a 914-6 or an RS, or bought as a separate part thru a dealership for a 911.

For all those who have followed John / Zithlord's posts on the Early 'S' registry board - *I* never claimed this *was* a 2.7RS wheel - I meerly stated that I had been told in good faith that it was.

Further, someone to whom I have immense respect for their knowledge also confirmed this wheel is the type fitted to 2.7RS's.

For John / Zithlord then go and post on a US board that :

'I think I will pass because the wheel has strange number stamps and a number nobody has heard of.'

but to then PM me saying 'sorry I can't afford it'

just isn't cricket

I have replied to Philip that I did not mean to offend him. I have not claimed that you are selling this as a RS wheel if you read the treads. But as I have found out also a wheel with no recess could have been sold with a 914-4, so combined with the price and the fact that I could not get the serial confirmed anywhere, I replied that I could not afford this wheel, and I should have added, at this risk(if being an ordinary 914-4) wheel. Again this might be a rare and valuable wheel and it sure looks beautiful so I hope it goes to a good home.

I tried to check serial and info about wheels on Sreg but did not state who the seller was or at what place it was being sold.

Last but very important I have never stated or meant to imply that Philip is trying to sell parts stating the goods to be something he knows they are not.

does anyone know where to get these wheels re-trimmed for a good price or but a kit to retrim them? Mine is missing the leather which gives it a skinny grip.

Guess i could go down the driving gloves route
