Hello
My Carerra has a lot of body roll and feels like its a waterbed when you take it over 80 area. By 110 it feels to light, that I've not been that illegal speed again.
It has fitted 15" Teledials and 225/205 tyres which could be the reason, but I was thinking that maybe the shocks could be worn out etc..
It had an mot a couple of months ago and all looks clean and dry under there.
Any advice?
PS - I have manuals, but is fitting new shocks on a '84 a relatively straight fwd job?
Cheers,
Poze

Hi, All 911's feel a little light at speed, but the waterbed description maybe taking it too far
I would look at:
Tyre pressures
Wheel bearings (do the fronts need nipping up?)
Suspension and steering wear (ball joints, trailing arm bushes etc)
Static suspension geometry
Dampers
Maybe if you are going to change the dampers anyway then this could be done before spending money on the alignment. Dampers are easy to change and worth every penny, so go for it!
The MOT means nothing for dampers, you could pass the MOT damper test with just the friction in an old damper.
Bilsteins come highly recommended

Good luck

Great advice, just what I was looking for.
I also searched and found a few other useful links ive printed off. Basically in the car current state you couldnt do 130/140 etc without being far far to risky. Not that I would do that unless on a track, but i wouldnt do that anyway.
I notice on corners on roundabouts its like a water bed to, so i shall check those and replace the shocks anyay, they look old and i think i have receipts for 1995!
Cheers,
Poze
any more advice welcome of course..!

Does your car have front and rear spoilers?
The car should have either none or both (ideally original spec) for the aerodynamics to be balanced.
I've seen some 911s with just the front or just the rear, or some after-market horrors, and dread to think what they might be like at high speed.

Dampers would be my first port of call. I dread to think what an Impact Bumper would be like to drive at 110 mph with nothing exercising control over the torsion bars. They are easy to change.
Bilsteins great but v. stiff. My car runs original equipment Boge dampers; nothing wrong with them and they cost less. You could try an email to Jeremy at
parts@impactbumpers.com, if he has new ones (and I think he has) they are guaranteed to be cheaper than anyone else.

The Bilsteins I have are 'standard' specification not the 'sport' ones and are really nicely matched to the bars. Not sure if the later Bilsteins are all sport, but ride quality on an early car really doesn't suffer.
Whichever way you go Poze your car will love you for a new set of dampers

New bushings and larger torsion bars will make a huge change. It did on my car (as well as new dampers etc).
Best

Thankyou both very much for the advice. All advice is noted and I'll be checking it on Saturday and getting the necassary shocks in.
My car dosent have any extras spoilers etc, a standard model with nothing added.
I do have 15" wheels, but I guess there wont be much different there over the standard 16" alloys. 17"s I would like at some point mainly as my 15s are poor condition and need respraying etc. They should also make the car handle better when beating WRXs..!
Thanks,
Poze

I don't think 17" wheels would improve the handling.
IMO, 15" or 16" wheels (possibly 7s&8s) with 205/55s and 225/50s would suit the car better.
