mileometer packed up on 914

My mileometer has packed up, at least most of the time! The speedo still reads fine but no miles are being clocked up. Presumably this means replacing the clock or can it be repaired.

I noticed that there is a small cable hanging down but I think this is to reset the trip meter - should this be attached somewhere?

I assume the cable is fine as i can see my speed ok?

Yes, it's repairable - there are some instructions as to how on the Pelican site, I think, but it's basically get the front off the unit, and once inside, the mechanics of the speedo part are pretty-much sealed away from you, but the mileometer mechanism is plainly in view, and you can see the little worm drive etc that slips out of position and stops turning the numbers, and pop it back into place - I managed to do this on my old, intermittent KPH speedo, and fixed the kilometer-meter (?) fine, but the speedo part defeated me.

The cable is the trip reset, and it should sit in a hole under your knees to the right of the steering wheel, and turning just the inner core actions the reset, but I think they get so stiff with corrosion over time, that people have them hanging free from the back of the speedo instead, and just turn the whole cable to reset the miles, which seems to work fine too.

possibly what Carl says, This is a view of the inside of my speedo.

But the drive gear on mine had worn away !

You might be more luck than I was.

wow thats pretty worn! I'll pull mine to bits maybe tonight and have a look. hopefully the speedo comes out without taking the wheel off.

I need to get the wheel off some time though to refurb the gauge rings and find out where the wiring went for the screen jets as a bodged up bullet connector came away when I was tinkering underneath one day!

Not neceessarily a bad thing if you have a limitted mileage policy

Very often there is a small plastic cog on the end of the drive which comes loose .
This can often be tightened up again by mechanical means ( bash it ! )
or fixative ( stick it ! )


No need to remove the wheel .
The speedo is not mechanically fixed and does just push out if you reach up behind the dash , grab firmly , twist gentley and push . It will pop out far enough for you to do all the necessary disconnecting sat in a relatively normal position .

But if the trip meter cable is "under your knees" you might want to think about adjusting your driving position

Thinking about it i'm talking pish again........
the plastic cog (that works loose) is on the end of the speedo drive , not the mileometer drive , so thats not your problem .
