DDK - Die Deutschen Klassiker

Since my car is off the road until Tim kindly delivers the verdict on my cdi box I thought I’d take the opportunity to do a little work on my distributor, i've had a bee in my bonnet over it for some time now.

So far I’ve stripped it down and it’s not nice, dry and rusty advance weights, rusty cam, worn plastic bits on the advance spring posts, all very unpleasant. I got hold of a good clean donor 2.7 dizzy for parts, I can all of swap the cam and advance bits from it and also take some of the shims for extra's if i need them, the rest I just plan on cleaning and putting back together.

Anyway can anyone recommend a good lubricant to use when I put it all back together, I’ve got some Castrol LM, is this ok to use or bit too gloopy? is there something special I should be using?

Don't bother.
Bin the lot. Fit Megasquirt (ignition only for now) and use EDIS 6 for the spark.... You know it makes sense

Tim, you are a pusher , There will be laws passed soon to get guy's like you and put you away

Makes sense to me, distributor's just wear out and will become harder/more expensive to replace. Get ahead of the game and go MS

is that your answer for everything?

a project way down the road for me I'm afraid Tim, I'd like to be able to say at least i know where I am with the conventional stuff, but even that's still proven to be taxing for me

Darren - use engine oil to lubricate the moving parts when you reassemble the distributor.

Bosch (& others) made a special grease to lubricate the central cam - don't know where you'd get it these days though...

You could probably use silicone grease instead.

Perfect, thanks Andy, I'll check with my local autoparts shop for the cam grease, failing that I'll buy a spare set of points, they usually come with enough

before... quite sloppy and very grubby with about 2mm endfloat on the shaft/cam too



and after... nice and clean now with a much more sensible amount of endfloat, less than .005 with a feeler guage, spins really nice now as well
