914 rear calipers (oh no!!)

I replaced my handbrake cables this weekend, the calipers have been working well considering, but the cables were a bit ropey. ALso put on new braided hoses and caliper pipes (never realised making copper brake pipes was so satisfying - do I need help?)

rained stopped play at one point!

I noticed one caliper has been replaced (dvr side) but the return spring for the handbrake arm was not the same as the pax side. There are less coils on the dvr side and the spring is definitely weaker so the problem is it doesnt pull the arm back properly, hence binding a brake.

Does anyone know if i can get just these springs as im getting cooked brake syndrome?

Kev

You can get the springs but to fit them I think you have to take the caliper apart.......

eek that sounds tricky - from what i can see it shold be do-able in situ under the car - its the external spring that can be got to by undoing a small spring clip then pulling off a washer.

It looks like the spring and then be unhooked and taken off but I could be wrong?

If not, quick bodge: you could put an external spring on instead (or in addition).

Disconnect the cable at the caliper end, and slip a spring over the cable. When re-connected, the spring (held in alignment by the handbrake cable) should press between the cable mounting braket on the swing arm, and the handbrake lever at the caliper.

Hope that makes sense: said it was a bodge ( ), and it does depend on finding a suitable spring. Nevertheless it's a good trick for lazy calipers, particularly as you can spec. the spring to give however much assistance the caliper needs. Obviously the ideal would be another new caliper, but even these don't seem to last for that long anyway.
