Hi, I have a '72 914 that is registered as a '73. What can I do to get an official letter stating that its manufactured in '72?

in general the VIN should be enaugh ...
if it's 47229xxxxx it's built between September 1971 and July 1972 (+/- a month ... I'm not really sure ...)
if it's 47329xxxxx it's built between September 1972 and July 1973

Cheers buddy! Its the later of those 2, but in the first 300 numbers, so a good chance its a '72.

Do I need to get the letter off porsche or will the owners club be able to do one?

When I imported my '72 911T a couple of years ago DVLA would not accept the US registration as proof of year of manufacture (I've never had any problems with the other 5 Porsches I've imported). Neither would they accept the information in the Technical Specifications booklet on chassis numbers built in particular years - & that is a Porsche Factory publication !
I had to get a letter from Porsche Cars GB stating the original date of manufacture - at a cost of ~ £62 !!!

Sorry - just re-read your original post & you're talking about being eligible for free road tax.
A letter from a recognised car club should be sufficient proof - don't know whether DDK is a 'recognised' club...might have to be PCGB.
However it's worth asking DVLA if a letter from DDK on headed paper would do.

well, this might help you:
look at eBay auction
290016099908
the D.O.T sticker (all US cars have it) clearly says, that VIN 4732907618 was built in 11/72
if you would need more of such photos from other 47329xxxxx cars, built before 01/73, this should be possible
I'm at the 914Club.com - there are more than 4,000 US-members
