Just got myself an '78 SC. Some of you have probably seen it on Ebay at some point. It was hard to commit especialy as I live up in Highlands of scotland and the car was in Worcester. However I had a professional inspection done by Nick at PCT Porsche with full written report, did an HPI check, spoke to about 100 people and have read everything I can get my hands on about 911s. I originaly began looking for and early 911 then changed my mind to 912 and finaly arrived at a decision on a 911 SC which you can always backdate to early look.
Or Retrograde as I like to call it. In general its a solid and mechanicaly sound car with a tired interior and bits of trim. Here is a short version of PCT report on the car
Interior 4/10 - generaly poor condition, worn seats no sunroof headlining..
Bodywork 6/10 - only paint job is letting it down slightly.
Underbody 8/10 - very good for the year, evidence of outer sill replacement (done well)
Running gear 7/10 - rear discs and pads would need to be changed soon, front anti roll bar bushes worn mot failure?
Engine/Transmission 7/10 - evidence of rebuilt engine, leak free, gearbox never changed or rebuilt but works well.
A few electrical items not working ie passenger mirror, cold air fan..
Tyres are worn and are of a wrong size.
I would like to slowly convert it to an early 70s RS look. I especialy hate the spoiler and the rear bumper.
But thats for future, there are more immediate problems after driving it for 300 miles.
I have noticed that the rims are 15" shouldn't they be 16" on SC? Tyres need to be changed urgently as they are of low quality, wrong size and cracked all over the place. However 15" quality tyres especialy in the sizes I want are very hard to come by. So I probably will have to get 16" and sell the 15" ones.
Are the sizes I was told about correct? 215/55 at the front and 225/50 at the back?
I've also noticed that my car is pulling to the right under hard breaking so I will have to look into it next weekend.
The steering wheel is original with missing leather, so its a horrible sticky plastic. I think I will go for a freshly re-introduced Momo Prototipo as on 70s racers. I found the vinyl seats very hard and sticky in the hot weather so that will have to go too. The gearknob is some horrible Carbon lookalike so that goes in the bin.
