A little advice required

Despite having owned a Boxster S and a couple of 996s over the last few years I am a newbie when it comes to classic Porsche motoring.

Furthermore due to a change in working circumstances I no longer drive 20k+ miles a year and therefore do not really need an everyday car like my 996.

I would quite like a classic 911 as a high days and holidays car (plus Le Mans and the occasional trackday) but don't really know where to start.

Any advice is much appreciated.

Alex

PS She Who Must Be Obeyed will dictate that I don't spend a fortune!!!!

Hi Alex,

We have all been in the same situation at some point.

Before asking about budgets, which is one of the major factors I would start reading and learning about the different models and different years. You will soon get a feel for what you like.

The next step is to go and drive some, where are you based? If local to a fellow DDKer I am sure they will take you out. You mention long holidays and track days, this may influence the car you decided to use, maybe a later 2.4 ltr car over the earlier 65-69 2.0 ltr cars?

The last point is ££, my advice would be to buy the best/most you can afford. ££ will also help decide if the car is to be LHD or RHD (RHD: is obviously a premium due to the rarity) and also which model. Ss have become very expensive in good condition and E models have also rapidly risen. You can still find cheapish T models in LHD but again it comes back to what you want.

I hope this helps

What's your budget?

Alan has put it well. I have alot of time for Ts, lots of car for yiour money, and they suit me, they cruise well, are lazy to drive and can be thrashed, but if you are looking for an occational track car too then an E gives you a good torquey engine for easy road driving but enough top end to be fun on a track. \rhd 2.4 Es are geting spenny so depending on your budget look at a LHD T/E from the states, ie a T with injection which were not supplied to the UK

I don't think we need to get too carried away with the track driving. From time to time I like to go on track as it safer there than on the roads to open a car up

However, on more than one occasion I have been mistaken for driving Miss Daisy

Bladesman,

Only real problem with early 911s is the body rot. Make sure you find one that is solid. You will, no doubt, need to do some restoration.

You could also look at a later car that was zinc coated, but these too have rust issues.

Good luck.

You'd be welcome to have a ride in my car. I'm located near Selby, so not far away.

Keep an eye on Northern DDK meets - we usually meet up every month for a natter somewhere in North Yorkshire - and the 'regular' cars include 911T, 911S, 911RS rep; 911RS (the real McCoy!); 911S SWB; 911 Sporto SWB. Be only too pleased to bore you to death with tales of classic 911's!

Bit quiet at the moment - most of the Northern guys are in Le Mans.

Northern DDK weekend coming up (12/13 August) - you'd be welcome to join us in your 996, or even better - you could navigate for me!

I would only add that a good PPI will save you thousands in the long run.

Guys,

Anyone know a good PPI person up in the Stockport area?

Interest in a later 3.2 Carrera.

Mmmm - now that could be a great weekend - although it does clash with the "Glorious Twelfth"

So what exactly is the Great North Weekend?

Would anyone like to point me in the direction of the pros/cons between SWB and LWB models? 2.0 v 2.2 v 2.4 engines etc?

Bladesman,

It depends what you want. cheapest cars are the 2.0 LWBs/. Most expensive are the RHD 2.4 LWBs (preferably the S Targa).

From my knowledge, the SWB vehicles are easier to have pedal off oversteer.

hope you get some other advise.

Best

As per Micks post - as your in Leeds and I'm in Harrogate - I'd be delighted to meet you for a beer and let you have a ride in a SWB and a LWB - they're completely different animal.

Drop me a PM or post on this thread.

The best advice is to drive them. If you have done your research and read up on the different models etc, the next question is budge? As this will help determine what’s possible.
