914 Head / Heat-exchanger studs

So the heat-exchangers are off and in good condition - which is more than can be said for the silencer - but a new silencer has been acquired, and that's fine.

But I snapped a stud getting the heat exchangers off - not bad in itself, as it snapped at the HE shoulder and the stump came out easily with an under-sized socket hammered-on after a few days soaking in release oil.

My problem now is that the stud is / was m10 into the head, but m8 where it's exposed - is this normal?

Has my head been re-drilled and tapped from m8 to m10 at some point?

If I order the correct studs for the car (1972 1.7), will I actually get the right or wrong parts?

If the standard studs are just simple m8s, where do I get a 'combi' stud from?

Thanks.

that's normal, but most half decent high street car shops should be able to match the exhaust stud as its nothing particularly special, that way you can match the part up.

Make sure its thread all the way so the nut doesn't bottom out and not actually be doing anything. I had that problem with my new exhaust, I have some extended nuts made up out of 11mm hex bar cut to about 30mm in length, 8mm internal thread with the first 5mm blind so that it didn't bottom out and leave the manifold hanging.

Thank you for the speedy response, Nige (I'll relax now).

Your 'special nuts' sound splendid.

I'll try to avoid needing them by buying correctly threaded studs as you describe.

I had my nuts lengthened so I could get more leverage on them, the standard small ones rust away, leaving you with rounded nuts.

They slip onto my socket better.

Its the only way forward on the evolutionary scale
