Guys,

My car is about ready for an oil change. I have used Coma classic, semi synthetic (wrong stuff), and Castrol GTX.

Is Swepco as good (gear lub) as its reputation?

Any recommendations on brand and or experience?

I have swepco in my box, & it deffo made a difference to the quality of teh shift, although I don't know what oil was in the box previously or how old it was either.

Engine oil ..... every year I have had a different oil in my car. I have used these fully synthetics:

Mobil1 ,
Silkolene Pro

At the moment I am running Castrol GTX.

My observations are that the car runs very slightly higher temperature with the Castrol over the other 2. I had less oil drips using the Mobil1 than the other 2 (although this is probo down to my original valve covers starting to warp slightly)

For my next oil change I think I'll be going back to Mobil1... depends how the GTX performs over the next 6 month.

Been using mobil 1 (0-40) for the past 6 years and its fine, though you will find leaks if the engine is not tight. Also put swepco in last year as I`ve got an LSD, a pain to put in (warm it up) was using castrol before hand.

when using Mobil1 etc .. I use the thicker grade 10/40 (if i have remembered the grade correctly )

I have a 93000 mile engine, no smoke one small leak, I use Castrol Classic 20/50 and Red58304 75w 90ns gear oil, the latter being fantastic on a older box, helps old synchro, take a deep breath when you see the invoice tho but worth every penny. Demon Tweaks for the gear oil, and Castrol direct

At days end, I bought 10 liters of Valvoline 20/50 racing oil from Chris Flavel of Stourbridge Motorsports. Gearbox oil was replaced last year and that is Mobil.

I use the same as jonny G like he says the red line is very good stuff no problems with the Castrol either .

Like hot66, currently running Castrol GTX 10/40 and have noticed higher running temp compared with previous '76 oil'.

On mobile 1 (0-40) on a 2.4S engine oil temperature is a constant 80 degrees C even during track days.

I used Valvoline in my 67. I can get it pretty cheap from my local tool shop.

Mike (210bhp) uses Valvoline in his 2.7RS & indicated he was very happy with it. I believe Neil Bainbridge recommended the stuff. I am now thinking of using it in my 2.4S at the next oil change

BTW, I only used about 350ml of castrol over the 1000 miles LeMan trip.

In 2004 I used slightly more Mobil1 on the same trip

I haven't changed oil on my 911 yet. But I used to own a Tatra 603 with a aircooled V8 at the back, until very recently. I had great results from any modern semi-synthetic multi purpose oils which are suitable for both diesel and petrol cars. They are formulated to withstand higher teperatures in diesel engines and dramaticaly reduced my overall engine teperature. Even on hot days in traffic it would never get much above 3/4 on the teperature gauge and Tatras are known to run hot, being on the line with red zone is considered normal.
