Just found these pics which were taken when testing different blasting to see what finish was best suited.

Just for interest sake, the first is cleaning by hand, yuck! and very boring, then fine grit and then vapour blasting. The vapour leaves a nice factory looking finish.



I also get most things done also before they get plated as it gives a much better and stronger finish. Items which are placed under high stress are also baked to prevent embrittlement.

Do you know what actually happens with the vapour blasting: i.e. is there still a blast media involved, if not, what is doing the actual cleaning?

Yes, is still uses a fine media, and like normal blasting there are different types for different purposes. The bead is blasted on the item using water vapour. The cabinet we use is not the largest but can fit a gear box. Here is what was done a few weeks ago.

The process it not something specific to either of us but as you know finding the right people that can produce the right results takes time. Nick uses a different chap than myself, but that’s expected as we are miles apart.

My Turbo 3.3 motor has had the fan hoisubg vapour blasted too:

It's the way to go, isn't it: so much nicer than a straight blast.

Here are a few more pics. I had my S calipers done before re-anodizing them.

Just coming back to this topic as I'll be looking to clean up the engine cases etc on my CB650 project sometime in the new year. What's the blast medium?

I don't think you should blast engine cases - you never get all the grit out of them.

Anyone got a contact for a vapour blaster. All the blasters round me seem to be thieving B^%&£"$.
