DDK - Die Deutschen Klassiker

I've always had Beetles in the blood and since a guy of VZi offered me his 57 Oval as a p/x plus cash I've been very tempted. Should be planning a viewing of each others wares soon.

Its running a 1835cc type with Del 40 carbs so should still have some 'go' its got that lived in feeling, rat look, patina whatever you want to call it. I'm promised its solid, although the viewing would reveal the extent of the solidness. My inital thoughts are to have a lump of cash left over from the p/x that would release funds to spend on the Oval (not too much as it will never be worth huge amounts) but I'm also hoping to have enough left over to also buy a good 914, which having been involved in my mate buying Barry's 914 I'm quite taken by them.





My gut feeling is go for it, the missus is quite enthusiastic too, a few others have said what that! after all money you've spent on the Porsche you must be mad (I should just about break even, its still less thatn depreciation on a modern car). But then they're not into cars.

What do you guys think?

depends what you are wanting out of a '2nd' car. I did the VW thing for 15 years, but nowadays want a car I can have fun with on twisty roads etc... unfortunatly IMHO a vw is not the car for this.

Personally I would hold out for an outright sale on the Porsche , then when you have the cash in your hand if you still feel like you want a VW, go out & buy what you actually want.

Having gone through selling my VW cabrio & recently my 67 911 I know how easy it is to be tempted with px's.

How much is he valueing the oval at?

If the monies right, the car is solid and you are going to end up with an oval and a 914 go for it!

I've done the Beetle thing before, but never had an early one, I'd be planning on a 914 for the twisty stuff.

I haven't discussed much on money side of things yet, but I would value the Oval at around 3-3.5k. I would only be going ahead if I get 5-5.5k cash on top of this. Then leaving about 1k for Beetle things and about 4.5k or maybe more for a 914 when one comes along.

It will only happen if I'm 100% happy with the deal.

ha ha ...... No I see what you mean if you get a almost sorted car and a bag of Dosh could be a wise move.. just make sure the money is saved for Porsche and not Oh I have just seen these cute baby things....DOH!!! no cash and stuck with a Porsche wanabe

The cash will be kept very seperate from the non Porsche related items cash pot.

Strictly Porsche only, may just run the bug for a year and sell, don't know, just so long I have some fun.

that sounds a good idea a year of tinkering and sorting out the bug will leave you lots of time to sort out a good replacement.. 911???? may be

3 - 3.5K sounds about right if the body is rust free ( structually)

I've been there before replacing inner wings, floor sections, heater channel repairs, bumper hangers, I'll be looking and poking in the right places. Not again, some cosmetic work is fine, I can handle a decent repaint if required, but I hung my welding gloves up some time ago. Don't mind dusting them off for some light welding work but nothing more than that.

If it ain't right I will be walking away.

The Oval looks cool, I'd go for it...mind you I'm more of a Vdubber anyway

I walk the narrow line between Porsche and VW, I don't mind which way I fall.

Do you like my cheesey metaphor there, my English Teacher would be proud, I did get a D in GCSE English.

The guy might be tempted to buy the Porsche outright as he's quite attached to his Oval. I don't mind either way, I'm just looking forward to spending the money, if it happens that is.

Certainly is, a good friend of mine does quite abit of work for them. Website and PHOTOGRAPHY, some people are just lucky.

We met up on Saturday, its a nice Oval but just abit too much work for me with the little time I have available these days. Having said that he's really interested in the 912 and has a few prospective buyers for his Oval in the next few days. Once he has sold that I think we might strike a deal.

My wallet will then be on the market for another Porsche to replace it with. I'm possibly thinking around 10-11k, not sure what's out there. I was really tempted with Phils 356 Coupe replica, but its now in new hands, but still within DDK.
